The more general speed issues aren't reproducible yet.  There is no common piece of kit/location which appears to be causing it.   It could be related to the original problem, i.e. all traffic goes through the devices that need to be patched, but this problem is more difficult to diagnose.

Thanks for the straightforward answer. I appreciate problems can sometimes be very difficult to diagnose (having spent 30 years trouble-shooting networks!).

If BT were having some contention issues at the same time, it could be clouding the water though 😕

Would I be right in assuming that contention in the BTW network could be diagnosed by getting someone suffering the problem to ping their Plusnet gateway?  This is the first node the connection hits at the other end of the BTW VLAN. If a customer gets 200ms pings to bbc.co.uk and 180ms pings to the gateway, then it would be safe to assume there's a lot of latency over the VLAN, unless the gateway router itself is congested and slow to respond. Currently I'm getting slightly variable pings to my gateway (ptn-ag04), not sure why that would be:
Quote
--- 195.166.128.193 ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 7.024/11.152/25.433/6.418 ms

I am told it the upload speed that causing the problem and high ping too.  This where the problem is

I would expect high latency to cause havoc with a Facetime call, so I suspect that's where the main problem lies.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

@ Bright
I tried pinging my gateway (ptw-ag02) and get this:
Quote
Ping statistics for 195.166.128.196:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 5ms, Maximum = 550ms, Average = 20ms

If I ping bbc.co.uk, I get this:
Quote
Ping statistics for 212.58.251.195:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 3ms, Maximum = 5ms, Average = 4ms

I think you'd need to be running both Facetime and Wireshark on your Mac. Not sure if you have the Mac version of Facetime installed. Mac version of Wireshark can be found here.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

@ AndyH
Hmmm... that won't work then! Obviously the same issue with traceroute:
Quote
traceroute to bbc.co.uk (212.58.251.195), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets
1  192.168.68.1 (192.168.68.1)  0.383 ms  0.282 ms  0.227 ms
2  lo0-central10.ptn-ag04.plus.net (195.166.128.193)  8.539 ms  15.181 ms  24.914 ms
3  link10-central10.ptn-gw02.plus.net (84.93.248.242)  6.528 ms  6.607 ms  6.801 ms
etc

Responding to pings is just a very low priority task on the gateway router...?

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Yeah I think that sounds right. At busy peak periods, the gateway won't respond to pings in a traceroute.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

What were you doing on your connection at the time you had the lost packets?
Edit: I know you are upset, but upsetting some of the most helpful members of the PN team won't help either.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

I was just looking at this forum and emails that all i have done all morning... Not good is it.
No I am not upsetting anyone Plus net is upsetting me so why we not allowed to upset them. That not right is it...
It seems no one knows anything in plus net everything goes round in a circle.  My ticket clearly stated what I was suggesting and to raise a fault is totally stupid answer.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

It's probably a better idea to create a new thread for your FaceTime problems than writing them on here.

You do seem to have a lot of high latency peaks (the yellow part of the graph) for just forum browsing and email. As AndyH suggests, it might be worth keeping that stuff in your thread over here, as there may well be something else going on...
Edit: You beat me to it  Smiley
