Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'IMAP.plus.net', Server: 'IMAP.plus.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
I knew it wasn't for me! And I have tried to follow all the instructions but I don't know what I am doing (I can happily set up ordinary email accounts so I am not completely daft)
I wouldn't have tried except that I now can't get access to the spam folder AT ALL

Mind letting us know what settings you haver entered?
You can find these by going to tools/accounts and then going into the properties of your IMAP.plus.net account and then selecting the servers tab.

The port for IMAP is 143, not 110 which is where I suspect your problem is.

outgoing mail (SMTP) - relay.plus.net
but I can find no way of changing "my incoming mail server is a POP3 server"
and anyway, if I did get further I don't understand what to do next!!

I haven't been asked to tick an IMAP box.
I have even found, under "advanced", an incoming mail server port number and changed it from 110 to 143 (Bob, note) but it still says POP3.
And this is what I got -
"The server responded with an error. Account: 'IMAP.plus.net', Server: 'IMAP.plus.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '* OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 CHILDREN NAMESPACE THREAD=ORDEREDSUBJECT THREAD=REFERENCES SORT QUOTA] Courier-IMAP ready. Copyright 1998-2005 Double Precision, Inc. See COPYING for distribution information.', Port: 143, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90"
I think I need to go back to my selective deafness where IMAP is concerned

well, guys, thank to all your help and advice I think I might have got there!
(don't worry, Barry, what ever pierre_pierre might have said, no one can be ruder to me than I am to myself)
I am still not quite sure what to do now but I have rescued a few emails and deleted about 39,000 - or rather I thought I had but they are still sitting there with a red cross and a line through.
Anyway, I am out for the next couple of days (NOT holiday - I wish!). I'll see what is happening on Friday.

Quote from: HPsauce You need to purge deleted messages to get rid of them totally if using IMAP.
In Outlook Express it is Edit ->> Purge Deleted Messages
Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.
