Why is peak sooooo slow!

During off peak times I can do a speedtest on my iPhone using the Speedtest.net app and get over 1500kbps, but during peak times the most I've seen is 61kbps and the lowest 7kbps.  In fact my upload speed was quicker than the download.
I've just completed on now(21:27 on Fri 31st July) and got 33kbps down and 83kbps up.
I appreciate that you feel the need to throttle during peak times, but these results seem very poor to me.

Re: Why is peak sooooo slow!

That is really bad.
Can you do the same test from a wired connection on your computer as it just may be the wireless connection or even the iPhone playing up.

Re: Why is peak sooooo slow!

Thanks for the quick reply, see the attached image.  This was done over a wired connection with a 2m patch lead.
The annoying thing about it is I can get good speeds off peak.
Jon
Edit:  I have attached two iPhone tests as well.

Re: Why is peak sooooo slow!

Just ran a check and I got full speed with the same tester
Can you check your exchange status http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/
Also what product are you on and are you anywhere near your usage limit
Which gateway are you on http://usertools.plus.net/@gateway/
That is about all I can think of at the moment as Plusnet don't throttle normal web browsing and that includes speed tests
Just thought of something else - as your upload speeds are also horrible.
Is there a possibility that someone is piggy backing on your line via your wireless connection and running P2P
Just as a final check try this speed test http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ and also do a tracert to bbc.co,uk

Re: Why is peak sooooo slow!

Just stuck a rant on this posting (http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,78223.0.html) as I have had the exact same issue for the last 2 weeks.
Don't be fobbed off - this is not a contentions issue (for me it happens exactly between 4pm and midnight) when they do traffic shaping other times it is fine. It's not where you do the test and its not the exchange.
It's not your PC, server, router or network - I was able to swap in a new router, turn all other equipment off and used an iPhone to prove the above timings are different between these times.
PlusNet seem determined to lose customers hand over fist with this disregard for issues people are having

Re: Why is peak sooooo slow!

I've had the same issue for months.  I complained countless times and was told that it was because of contention, so there was nothing they could do about it.
However, today I discovered that Plusnet throttles traffic.  For details, check this webpage:
http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/quality_broadband/speed.shtml#unlimitedspeeds
I can understand limiting speed during peak hours but the extent to which Plusnet limits it is ridiculous.  Most evenings, my internet speed is about 50kbps just before midnight and about 5000kpbs just after midnight.
Does anyone have similar information for other ISPs?

Re: Why is peak sooooo slow!

I seem to be OK here using Unlimited but I've a sneaking suspicion I'm on the new segment as I'm connected to pcl-ag01.

Tonight's packet drops aren't looking too good at all to be fair although we will be balancing the network tomorrow morning which should improve the situation. Monday's are also our busiest night.
I think it's fair to say that things are going to be below par this evening for some compared to what they should be Sad
@stewartb, your problem seems to be a little different and I reckon there's probably something wrong with your account. I'll reply to your post in the other thread.

The speeds I quoted earlier were obtained from http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/. ; If I tried downloading any file off a website between 4pm and midnight, it'd be around 5kbps, ie not worth trying!  Between midnight and 4pm, I can download at 512kbps which is ok.
I am still on the Broadband Plus package and I have only today come to realise just how much I could have had if I'd upgraded.  I'd never looked into upgrading in the past as I was told Broadband Plus users would also benefit from an up to 8mb package.  I couldn't see the difference between the packages without that table.  Angry

If you want an easy product speed comparison this is by far the best http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/plusnet_shaping2.htm

Re: Why is peak sooooo slow!

Thanks - I'll check out this website.  Just going to be a bit annoying to be tied down to a long contract again.

Re: Why is peak sooooo slow!

Hi moychow,
We can move you onto value, unlimited or pro on a 12 month contract if you like rather than 18, provided you don't opt for a new router (if you do it'll be an 18 month contract).
Let me know if that sounds acceptable and I'll arrange it for you, thanks,

Re: Why is peak sooooo slow!

Hi Orbrey
Thanks for the kind offer but I think I'll give another ISP a try.
For info, I was happy with the speed and quality of the internet service I obtained during off peak hours.  If that's available at all times under the pro package, it must be great.
However it seems I can get this sort of package (with a 12 month contract and new router) for cheaper elsewhere.
