Very Slow Backup Issue

I have recently switched from Sky to Plusnet for my broadband. For the first time since changing over to Plusnet, I received an alert to backup my files on my Laptop. I use Norton 360 Premier to backup my files.
I started the backup at about 10 pm and I decided to leave the Laptop on over night so that I could complete the back up. I awoke at 8 am to find the procedure still running, but only 19% of the files had been backed up. This procedure would normally take about an hour to complete when I was with Sky.
Has anyone had similar problems ?

Sky v Plusnet

I have just moved from Sky to Plusnet for my Broadband provider. During my time with Sky I used to back up my files to Norton cloud; It used to take about 2 hours to back up about 7Gb of data. I have just made my first back up since changing to Plusnet; the time it took to back up about 10Gb of data was 49 HOURS.
Has anyone experienced similar problems, and how have you resolved this issue ?

Re: Very Slow Backup Issue

Please post the stats from your router (sync speed, attenuation and noise margin) - that may indicate what's going on.
The full output from a BT diagnostic speed test will also help.
It's the you need to run.

Re: Very Slow Backup Issue

A quick calculation
10GB = 80Gb = 80,000 Mb
Upload speed on standard ADSL (sync 448kbps) is about 370kbps = 0.37 Mbps
Time to upload = 80,000 / 0.37 / 60 / 60 = 60 hours
So the time seems about right for ADSL2+ depending on upload speed
Referring to your Sky result this is a quick calculation
7GB in 2 hours is 56,000Mb in 2 hours so giving an upload speed of 7.78Mb/sec which isn't possible on a standard Sky connection.
One possibility - and I don't know how Norton Cloud works - is that it performed an incremental backup on Sky so uploading a lot less than 7GB but the one on Plusnet was a full backup not an incremental one

Re: Very Slow Backup Issue

Hi there,
I've just placed an order to uncap your upstream which should improve things for you, it'll complete on Monday. Please let us know how it goes.

Re: Very Slow Backup Issue

The effect of uncapping will depend upon the length of your line. It will restore your upload sync speed to close to the speed you were getting on Sky which at best will be about twice as fast.
Based on the calculations Jim has done which I've checked you are not going to achieve a 7GB backup in anything like two hours.
