Consider registering your interest on CityFibre, as I would hope that they would build to areas with most requests.

I'm registered as 'interested' with about five different AltNets that have a presence in the surrounding villages, 

unfortunately the closest CityFibre installation is about seven miles away and no signs of coming my way.

I would observe that there are differences between Altnets in terms of reliability and service.

The best can be very good, but given the financial stresses on various Altnets support and reliability can sometimes be a bit variable.

Personally I think a service based on Openreach infrastructure has a value.

What about ISPs that use other wholesale networks?

I've no personal experience of ISPs that use other wholesale networks.

As a bit of a generalisation however, the networks that wholesale are often towards the larger end of the Altnets and as an end user you buy your service from a large ISP.

If there is a problem you tell your ISP and they tell their supplier (as with Plusnet and Openreach). These large ISPs also have significant contracts with the Altnet so will hopefully get a good response in the case of faults.

That is very true, although there are only a few alternative network who wholesale, and to be honest, I personally wouldn't go for one who didn't as you end up tied to them alone, which I regard as anticompetitive.

As you may (or may not) know, I am with Zen Internet, unfortunately still on the BT/OR network, but on the couple of occasions an issue has involved the network provider, the response has been rapid - the elephant in the room being OR's insistence on them sending me another router 'in case it was hardware related'

I knew it wasn't, Zen knew it wasn't, but they still had to go through the charade until OR sent an engineer out to repair a fault caused by Connect Fibre sub-contractors on the DP.

From what I read, Zen are generally a good supplier of internet and they charge enough to fund a higher level of service.

Having said that, I've been with Plusnet for many years and actually (even when I had a copper service) I've been satisfied with the support on the occasions I've experienced faults.

Zen are slightly more expensive, I agree, although you can negotiate better than the headline prices, especially on renewals - I'm actually paying about £1.00/pm more for 100/20 FTTP than I was for 40/10 FTTC when I moved in 2021.

I was fairly happy with PN, but as I correctly guessed when the Help Team had a 'retraining' exercise around the time, the actual support - should I need it - would be on a par with that of BT  Retail, and having had to deal with them on behalf of family members, I knew I wouldn't be a happy bunny.
