What external video connectors do you have on your laptop?
What external video connectors do you have on the HDTV?
Does the HDTV come with any video cables?
What is the make and model of the HDTV?

Re: Using Laptop with 42" HDTV

Presumably you will have a scart socket?
As Peter says, it depends what output you have from your laptop.
Do you have VGA? DVI? S-Video?
Assuming you have a VGA-out and Scart-in £59.99, http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=37141&doy=3m6
If you have S-Video out and Scart-in, you could opt for one of these: http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=35910&doy=3m6
If you have VGA-Out and only the component in, you could opt for a cable from these guys. £35 - look on the 'component' tab. http://www.projectorpoint.co.uk/projector-accessories/audio-visual-cables.html
I've not searched for a DVI to component cable, as I don't think its likely your Amilo notebook will have one of these - if it does, they are available too.

Re: Using Laptop with 42" HDTV

So there is your answer:
You want either a DVI-I to Component cable, or you want a VGA to Component cable if you use the adaptor referenced in the instructions.

Re: Using Laptop with 42" HDTV

DVI-I supports both Analogue and Digital signals.
If your TV has a DVI input that would be preferable, but somehow I doubt it will have.
Neither will connect sound, you'll need to do that through a separate cable if you need it.

Re: Using Laptop with 42" HDTV

Looking at the spec on Aldi's website, it appears the TV has a VGA input, so the cheapest option is probably a VGA-VGA cable, and use the DVI-VGA adaptor that came with your notebook.
As @Daddies  says, you'll need toconsider sound seperately. If you want it, your notebook should have a 3.5mm stereo headphone socket - there are two of these on the rear of your TV too if I'm looking at the right one. Just connect a 3.5mm Stereo Male to Male cable between the two for sound. (Alternatively if you have surround sound seperate, you can link the sound directly into that.)

Re: Using Laptop with 42" HDTV

The other thing to beware of, to avoid disappointment, is that the VGA inputs on many TV's are limited in resolution and/or aspect ratio. You may only get 4*3 not widescreen and 800*600 at best. Also the screen refresh rate will need to be set to something the TV will accept, probably no higher than 60Hz.

Re: Using Laptop with 42" HDTV

Yeah, I was worried about that with mine, but my trusty Samsung (Series 5) didn't let me down.
Its still the one to go for, unless you can afford the series 6 100Mhz sets.

Re: Using Laptop with 42" HDTV

Is the VGA to VGA cable the answer then?
Any chance of supplier/detail?

Re: Using Laptop with 42" HDTV

So long as you still have the adaptor to go between your laptop and the cable (it'll likely be a couple of inches long with a male DVI plug and a female VGA socket on it).
Assuming you still have it, I'd go for the VGA cable (You'll want a male to male one and you'll need to decide how long you want it to be.)
Maplin is as good a place as any for stuff like this. http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=97367&doy=3m6
A quick Google for Male to Male VGA Cable yields some alternatives too.
