Upgrade from Plusnet FTTC to FTTP broadband - some clarifications before making the leap …

For info, we haven’t already upgraded from FTTC broadband because our monitored alarm system needed our BT landline (it was connected to it, for comms with the alarm monitoring centre), and we only just got the alarm system modified to ‘divorce’ it from the landline (it now uses mobile data for comms). However, in making that alarm system mod, we realised that that was really the only ‘user’ of our (expensive) BT landline, nowadays (we use our mobile phones for everything else), so we don’t need it anymore. (Note that the imminent switch of all BT landlines to Digital Voice also focused our thoughts around that).

We are therefore now in a position to upgrade our existing Plusnet FTTC broadband (which is out of contract) to Plusnet FTTP (full fibre) broadband, and get rid of our BT landline.

However, we just wanted to clarify a few things before proceeding …

  1. What is the current lead time for such a Plusnet FTTC broadband upgrade to FTTP, typically? - ie. if we requested it tomorrow, roughly when would the installation actually happen?
  2. Can we choose the installation date, or is it chosen (‘imposed’) by BT Open Reach? (who presumably do the actual installation work, on behalf of Plusnet)
  3. Would the Plusnet FTTP broadband upgrade request ‘automatically’ get rid of our BT landline, or would we need to communicate with BT as well?
  4. I note that the new Plusnet FTTP broadband service comes with a 24-month contract, but we expect to move house within a year or so. Would we be able to transfer that Plusnet contract, partway through, to our new home, without penalty? What would happen if Plusnet couldn’t provide FTTP broadband, there? (eg. new home in a location without fibre)
  5. Email is a key reason for us to stay with Plusnet for the upgrade to FTTP broadband: we have 3 email addresses (1 relatively recent ‘plusnet’ email address, created in 2020; 2 legacy ‘madasafish’ email addresses, inherited by Plusnet), all of which are extensively used on a daily basis, and are associated with hundreds of online accounts (often the Account ID), comms, etc, and would therefore be nigh on impossible to ‘change’ everywhere! We obviously noticed the lengthy email outage yesterday (11/2/26) (now fixed), as we couldn’t pick up any of our emails, but, until I registered on the Plusnet Community to post this entry, and I read some other posts, we had no idea that Plusnet appears to be in the process of outsourcing its email service to a third party (Greenby)? To date, we’ve received no communication whatsoever (ie. no emails), from Plusnet (or Greenby), regarding any email migration, so we can only assume that our 3 active email accounts are still being serviced by Plusnet directly. However, I’m now wondering what the likely impact of that email migration will be on our email accounts, and whether that might change our decision regarding the FTTP broadband upgrade? … assuming that the email migration hasn’t already happened! (from other posts I’ve read, it appears that other customers’ email migrations didn’t happen without any comms, or in a way that was totally ‘transparent’ to the end user).

Any input that the Plusnet Community can give on the above will be hugely appreciated, so that our upgrade to FTTP broadband is made in an informed way, many thanks!

@Grainywand

1) There is no defined "lead" time for installs - it just depends on how busy OR is in your area.

2) You get given a provisional install date to be confirmed by OR. Once you get this I believe you have the choice of delaying the appointment if it's not suitable.

3) Do not speak to BT - let PN do the notification.

4) Don't know. I assume you don't know yet where you're moving to.

5) My PN email account is due to migrate on or after the 16th of this month so they are still working their way though users. Once you've been migrated you PN email is divorced from your PN account so you're free to change ISP at your next contract remewal. Note you get 2 years of free email with Greenby and then it becomes £15pa.

Speak to PlusNet Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 about you're options. You may be able to get a shorter contract than 24 months. Try and avoid mentioning the alarm system if at all possible.

Hi @bmc

Many thanks for the quick response(s), much appreciated! - that’s all really helpful.👍

Re: my point 4 - no, we don’t know where we’re moving to yet. We haven’t started looking yet (waiting for better weather for house-hunting!😂), but it might be a village location, for example …

Many thanks again and all the very best!
