Re: Trouble with mumble

Could you get us a pathping please for someone that  isn't on Plusnet. Looking at the results I'm seeing I'm suspecting either upstream congestion or a configuration issue somewhere between LINX and the host. The traces show that the traffic goes across someone called portlane into Sweden so it could be that their link is congested or there's some config error somewhere between  us and them. A few results from other ISPs will show if they take the same routes.

Re: Trouble with mumble

Over the last couple weeks, I've definitely noticed some performance problems with thepiratebay.se (while getting my linux iso's).
Saw this thread today, and I've only just put two and two together.
While thepiratebay.se doesn't respond to a ping, a tracert shows an all too familiar sight:

Tracing route to thepiratebay.se [194.71.107.15]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
  1    29 ms  101 ms    97 ms  dsldevice.lan [192.168.1.254]
  2    61 ms    36 ms    35 ms  lo0-central1.ptn-ag02.plus.net [195.166.128.205]
  3    28 ms    29 ms    29 ms  gi2-7-211.ptn-gw01.plus.net [84.92.5.137]
  4    29 ms    29 ms    28 ms  po4.ptn-gw02.plus.net [212.159.1.139]
  5    28 ms    28 ms    31 ms  ae3.ptw-cr02.plus.net [195.166.129.34]
  6    55 ms    44 ms    35 ms  po2.ptw-gw02.plus.net [195.166.129.39]
  7  805 ms  840 ms  809 ms  teln.lon.portlane.net [195.66.225.159]
  8    *        *    1508 ms  te-2-1.sto3.se.portlane.net [80.67.4.134]
  9  817 ms  776 ms  847 ms  te-1-1.sto2.se.portlane.net [80.67.4.137]
10    *        *        *    Request timed out.
11    *        *        *    Request timed out.
12  ^C

Also, there is a general lack of bandwidth while loading images from the static.thepiratebay.se server, which would also point to peak time congestion as already alluded to in this thread.

Re: Trouble with mumble

wlololololol
PL on the same host as TBP?
That explains so much ..
And is so baws!
Crazy
Anyway yeah, nobody else is having issues so it must be something other than simply load. But yeah, not to say I don't appreciate the funny here.

Re: Trouble with mumble

Yeah, I'm now 95% sure it isn't anything to do with traffic management, and is something with our peering.  Getting closer!
Nice spot on the piratebay stuff btw, that supports this.

Re: Trouble with mumble

I've raise an internal problem with ID:70609 for this.  Our network engineer team is pretty busy atm, but I'm hoping I can get a bit of time from them over the next few days to try and figure out what we can do.  It does appear to be a problem off our network though.

Re: Trouble with mumble

Cool. Just wondering how it can be a problem off your network if its only happening to people on your network tho?
Also today and yesterday it has actually been usable .. where as the preceeding week it was completely not so. I had thought you had done something tbh.

Re: Trouble with mumble

We peer with companies who handle sending the traffic on to their destination.  That company could well be different to who other ISPs use, and use different routes to get the traffic there.  That make sense?

Re: Trouble with mumble

You'll be able to confirm that it's our peering by changing the route of your traffic - for instance by using a VPN service of some description.
Perhaps try and find a free one on the internet?

Re: Trouble with mumble

@reetpetite
I'd recommend TunnelBear - 500MB for free each month but if you use the in-app button to tweet them they'll give you another 1GB for free each month.
It even has a US/UK toggle switch.
EDIT: Or not.. They appear to use the same portlane link?

Doesnt mean the company with said over-subscribed link hasnt done something about it (e.g. increased capacity or reduced abuse of said capacity)

Could be why the link became oversubscribed, if people are using that VPN service to download from TPB (as discussed earlier)...
Hopefully its one of those problems that will 'sort itself' or Plusnet can do the  Huh face at their peering partner and get them to deal with it... Smiley

Re: Trouble with mumble

I am now using Putty and SSH/Socks tunnel hosted on some dudes pr0n server in Ohio. Mumble is working fine for me in the interim. Seems pretty daft but its fun!
So at least I'm not completely stuck without coms now! Thank ye gods.
Hopefully yeah you super nerds can jigger some poke. Get in there and tackle something!  Cheesy

Re: Trouble with mumble

Brilliant, but that doesnt say if the underlying issue is resolved .. Smiley
is everything still OK without the need for SSH? (obviously only test when you're giving up for the night or before you start... wouldnt wanna interrupt the sesh Wink )
