Test BT Master Socket

Hi,

I am a Plusnet customer for my house, and am attempting to check the broadband in my daughters flat to also get Plusnet.

We've been told by a previous provider that there is a fault, although I don't know what the fault is.

Can I test by plugging a phone into the BT master socket test port? If I do so should I hear a dial tone?

And should I hear a dial tone even if we've not signed up to Plusnet or any other provider as yet?

I would appreciate some advise, thanks!

Re: Test BT Master Socket

@archie456 what @Gel writes is correct but there is a bit more to it.

If it's basically a live line but not in service you will generally get at least a bit of sound (if you click into the telephone you will usually hear something in the earpiece).

Alternatively it might have a dial tone, in which case try dialling 17070 which is a test number.

If there is an allocated number it will tell you what it is. If it isn't a "normal" number for the area (doesn't start with the area code) then it is some sort of "holding" number.

If there is a fault between the exchange and the master socket in the flat (which may well say "Openreach" on it) then if you sign up for service part of that will involve fixing the line fault.

I am the satisfied customer....
