TP-Link TD-8817 on Long Exchange Only Line

I was having problems with a bouncy connection when I was with BT: BTHomeHub = Stable, TP-Link = Bouncy. These have continued after moving to Plusnet, the People over at the pfSense forum have helped to diagnose that the TP-Link seems to be the root cause of the issues https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=85188.0.
Some Reviews on Amazon also state this is a problem, with comments then saying it is rubbish and that the TP-Link works fine.

Having subsequently carried out more research, it seems that the problem I have experienced with the TD-8817 modem is quite common. Basically, without going into the specifics of SNR, line attenuation, ADSL 2+, VPI/VCI settings etc., the TD-8817 modem is completely useless if you are more than 2.4km away from your local telephone exchange (telephone line length that is, not line of sight) because of the chipset the TD-8817 modem uses. I need a modem which uses a Broadcom chipset, which holds long-line connections much better. My old Netgear modem/router uses this chipset, which is why it’s working brilliantly in bridge mode. The frustrating thing about this whole experience is that TP-Link should be more honest with its customers and tell people that its TD-8817 modem is unsuitable for customers who have long line lengths from their telephone exchange. Especially since, given the TD-8817 modem’s price point, it’s likely to be bought by customers who are not network savvy – which I wasn’t until I had to go through this experience! I’m now a real bore at the pub, trying to impress everyone with my newly found knowledge on home networking! Don’t make the same mistake I did! Either do your research thoroughly and get a separate modem/ router appropriate to your particular networking requirements or get a combined router/modem combination and save yourself a lot of hassle.

So my question is does anyone else have this problem? Can any recommend a higher quality modem that can act as a PPPOA to PPPoE bridge like the TP-Link Does?
Thanks in advance!

Here is approximately 24 hours of ppp.log GREP'd to show down and ups, which occur regardless of if I am actively using the connection or not.

Re: TP-Link TD-8817 on Long Exchange Only Line

I would try a huawei hg612 (openreach fibre modem), then unlock it and set it up for adsl, that is simple, just tick a couple of boxes on its config pages.
Are you on a 21C network?

Re: TP-Link TD-8817 on Long Exchange Only Line

Thanks for the really speedy reply. What is a 21C network?
Any ideas where I can get a open reach modem from?

Re: TP-Link TD-8817 on Long Exchange Only Line

21C network is a type of BT exchange you may be on. Most exchanges are now 21C enabled; if anybody on your exchange can get >8 Mbps then you are on one.
To find out check here http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/
I only ask as the hg612 is a little temperamental on the older (20CN) exchanges.
You can find the openreach modem on a well know auction site (ebay); and unlocking instructions here http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/hg612unlock.htm.

Re: TP-Link TD-8817 on Long Exchange Only Line

After a Line Profile Reset my HG612 is now holding a stable connection. The TP-Link had caused a 2.4Mb sync rate due to constantly dropping out.

Depressingly that is about the best I have seen this line do Sad
