Switch from Unlimited Fibre Extra (inc. Line rental) to Fibre

I currently have PlusNet Unlimited Fibre Extra inc. Line rental.

I don't use the landline phone for outgoing calls as my mobile gets a decent signal and I get unlimited calls with my package. I have been updating most of my contacts to remove the landline number.

I am considering switching to PlusNet Fibre (without Line rental). If I go ahead, is this just a change that is made at the exchange and/or cabinet? Will there be any interruption to my internet connection?

Also, can I continue to use my existing ADSL/VDSL2 router?

@RichT

Phone the PlusNet Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 to see what's what.

They'll be able to answer any questions.

Fix

@RichT There is no change at all to your current set-up, except that the phone element will be removed (remotely). It does mean that there will be no phone service available - the change disables your phone line completely.

Re: Switch from Unlimited Fibre Extra (inc. Line rental) to Fibre

Looking to possibly do the same thing, ie switch from "Unlimited Fibre Extra" to "Fibre" I understand nothing changes except the phone line is remotely removed.

Bit confused because Plusnet say the estimated speed if I stay on Unlimited Fibre Extra is 66Mb download and 18Mb upload, yet if I upgrade to Fibre the estimated speeds are 35-40Mb download and 8-10Mb upload?Huh

Is this correct?Huh

@Stealth732 That makes two of us, @Stealth732  - if you move to 'FIBRE', your speed should be as high (up to 80Mb/s) as your line will tolerate. I suggest you call and ask for clarification. What speed do you currently get?

Currently get around 45Mb which I can live with, never use a phone so that is no benefit or loss, but I don't want to lose any speed

Re: Switch from Unlimited Fibre Extra (inc. Line rental) to Fibre

When I was requesting the switch, PlusNet said my estimated speed would be 62Mbps to 70Mbps which was very similar to what I was getting on Unlimited Fibre Extra.

Since the switch to Fibre, that estimate has been proved to be accurate.

I have just run a new check and got 67.5Mbps / 19.6Mbps.

Thanks for the info, I can't see why it would be slower, but the estimate they have shown as just made me doubt myself a little.

Re: Switch from Unlimited Fibre Extra (inc. Line rental) to Fibre

Ah, that might explain it. If you are at the low end for speed, as you are, you are often put on a 40/10 profile to maintain stability.

A screenshot of the result from here BT Broadband (obscuring personal data) would help.

Re: Switch from Unlimited Fibre Extra (inc. Line rental) to Fibre

Looking at that, your 'last mile' of copper of copper (between the FTTC cab and your property) appears to be 'impacted' - poor quality, so PN probably would put you on a 40/10 profile, but you could always ring COTS - customer options -on 0800 013 2632 and see if they would consider trying the 80/20 profile.

How stable is your connection?

Re: Switch from Unlimited Fibre Extra (inc. Line rental) to Fibre

Connection is perfect really no issues worth talking about, once in a while it will go off for a minute but rarely.

My only real concern is that if I change things it will mess things up.

I can see no reason why changing to 'Fibre' - with no phone - should 'mess things up', and even if they insist on putting you on a 40/10 profile, I doubt you will see any discernable difference in performance. Are you a gamer, or someone who hammers the connection with a lot of uploads/downloads?

Re: Switch from Unlimited Fibre Extra (inc. Line rental) to Fibre

Not really, worse case scenario would probably 2 tvs streaming and a few people on youtube, tik tok etc.

That has never caused a problem yet, so should be ok
