Strange broadband 'interruptions' - Anybody else having similar issues?

Lowest that I have had so far (more so on the upstream which has mostly been 20mb IP and 18.5mb speed).

That first hop is your router. 
Looks like the hardware is slowing you down.

I know.
The unknown is if it, or something else, is causing my mysterious spikes at various times of the day. Tonight seems to be worse for some reason. Multiple spikes in quick succession since 5pm.

Nothing else running on your connection?  Disconnect your modem and leave it for a minute, then reconnect.  Lets see if connecting to a different gateway fixes it.

Only have my work laptop and home desktop at the moment, nothing running that is actively using the connection (or at least not that I know of - have done virus + malware checks that have come up empty).
When you say disconnect the modem, do you want me to power it off or simply un-plug the phone cable?

If you are adsl, best is to go into the router and disconnect.  If you are fibre, you'll have to reboot the openreach modem.

-don't know if this (also) helps, but im on Fibre too. (If this is totally useless, sorry, thought it might help as im having the same pattern with the two timeouts)

Check my TBB monitor, the multiple spikes of red/yellow/blue has been a re-occuring theme for my connection.

Can you traceroute to the beeb again?  
Also, what gateway are you connected to?
