So slow!

Why is my speed so slow?
I know I am on the Ardwick exchange in Manchester which is heavily contended, but I am getting less than 1MB connection speed.
Is there anything I or Plus Net can do to improve this?

Its never been this bad. Usually nearer 5.5M.

Re: So slow!

yep ditto should be getting 300kB/s with speed tests but at best 100kB/s and in a real download 30kB/s, so something is wrong in PN towers.

Re: So slow!

Morning guys.
There weren't any speed related issues that I was aware of last night.
If the problem continues, please let me know and I'll run some tests.

Re: So slow!

I had had a quick read and it seems similar to my problems.
Apparently Christmas Lights are a bad source of interference.

Have a look at: http://www.dougrice.plus.com/Erlangs/adsl.htm
Many people have reported it useful. A collegue at work said he told his team and 9 out of the 10 people who read my page who tried it got a dramatic increase in speed.
This is what BT's Suppliers Information note SIN 346 states ( http://www.sinet.bt.com/346v2p6.pdf )
"7.3 Additional notes about CPE filters.
Note that the standard BT PSTN CPR interface is a 3 wire circuit whereby the bell wire is AC-coupled from the line B.
This bell wire must either be filtered by the filter or left open circuit at the Line Port and recreated at the Telephony Port of the filter. This is may be acheived using a 1.8uf capacitor between line B ( pin5) and the bell wire ( pin4) at the Telephony Port."

Merry Christmas

Re: So slow!

Dreadfully slow again this morning - here are my speed test results -

The speed test has completed on test server speedtester1.nat.bt.com for user xxxxxxxxxxx and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of
178 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.
Your IP address is 84.92.166.67, your browser is reported as being Mozilla 5.0 and is running on Macintosh Intel Mac OS X.
BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:
For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.

Re: So slow!

I think you are on a 2Mbps fixed speed service rather than maxADSL (up to 8Mbps rate adaptive). With your stats I would expect you to get significant benefit from changing to 'up to 8Mbps', sync speed over 7000kbps is likely. You can check your likely speed by entering your phone number and postcode into SamKnows (here). Then click the BT ADSL button.
Unless there is some reason for staying on the fixed speed service I suggest you raise a ticket requesting your service be upgraded to maxADSL.
Note that the sync speed is the rate at which ATM packets are transmitted. Allowing for ATM and TCP/IP overheads, and data management effects means actual throughput rates will be much less than that.

Re: So slow!

You might want to remove your telephone number.
Given that you are on a fixed rate product and your speed is that low it is classed as a fault.
Going to max may help a bit as you will have a higher base speed from which BT throttle you but the fact that your exchange has been red since November and we have passed the fix date nothing much is likely to improve until sometime in January
