PPPoA or PPPoE

I've just realised that the last two modem/routers I've used have connected to PN using PPPoE.
The documentation I was supplied by PN a few years ago tells me to connect using PPPoA.
If I reset the router to PPPoA it syncs to the exchange but will not connect to the internet even after I have power cycled it.
Is this normal ?

No, but I have seen this before.  In the days when AOL used PPPoE I also saw the inverse, when only PPPoA worked on the odd line.
