Network password change

it’s ok I resolved it.😁

How can I change my network password? I logged into the router using my pc and managed to change the admin password but cannot change the network password. Under the tab “Broadband” it has a label “Password” but the password is hidden as dots and although I can highlight it I cannot change it? Can anyone help? Thanks

Re: Network password change

In case anyone happens across this question later … (though I don't know how it was resolved for JC99 above):

The Plusnet hub should auto-configure itself with the current network details after a factory reset -- and it can take a few minutes. Talk to technical support to change a password (for your account and its network connection), though there is seldom any need.

The network details are, by default, the plusnet account name and password, so if you want to change the password you'll need to talk to technical support. In due course, the plusnet hub (router-modem) receives the updated details, or you can enter them directly into the router's setup pages. If you're using your own router, these are the details for the PPPoE configuration.

Example: After a factory reset, the plusnet hub resets to setup@plusdsl.net with a password such as PaSsWoRd (which is hidden by dots on the plusnet hub configuration page). This is not customer-specific, and is only used for the auto-configuration process. It used to be tr069@plusdsl.net. The plusnet hub waits and retries until it gets a reply.

After a few minutes, the auto-configuration server matches to the details for your line identifier (number), and provides the hub with its details. This now becomes something like MyPlusNetAccountName@plus.dsl and MySekritPa55word. These are the details from when the plusnet account was set up. Now the plusnet hub is up to date, and you have a working connection under your own account.

A changed plusnet account login password might become out of sync with the PPPoE details for the modem-router's connection. There's no technical reason they have to be the same, but there is not much point in making them different. Once they are in sync, a factory reset should auto-configure OK.

Don't take this reply as authoritative: it's just what I observe the plusnet hub doing. The process might be different for full-fibre connections (I have no idea) because recognising the 'line' and its ID to match up to the right details happens in a different way for those.

If anyone spots an error here, please do correct me. I thought this question was interesting, and maybe relevant to other people.

Re: Network password change

After a few minutes, the auto-configuration server matches to the details for your line identifier (number

it doesn't match the line number,. Each router has a unique serial no, which is recorded against an account when n the router is dispatched.

The auto configure matches the serial no to the account

The process is exactly the same for full fibre accounts

Re: Network password change

@SixCopperKs

The network details are, by default, the plusnet account name and password, so if you want to change the password you'll need to talk to technical support.

This is not correct, you do not need to phone tech support to reset your broadband password, it can be achieved by either  using "Forgotten my password" link on the members centre login screen or when logged into the Members centre "Manage account" where there is an option to change the password. It is important the email address entered to the members centre is correct.

Therefore both the broadband username and plusnet account password are always synchronised.

Both the Hub one and two should automatically refresh the passwords using CWMP (TR069) but for third party routers a manual change is required.

Re: Network password change

I changed my password ages ago using exactly that process, i.e. via the member centre.

One interesting thing I found is that there is an inconsistency between characters the member centre will accept and what the router (Hub 2) will, so be careful or have a backup access route!

I don't recall the exact problem but there are special characters that one won't accept but the other will. Given you have to change in the member centre first I'm guessing the router is more restrictive. IIRC I had to access the member centre using my phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot to sort it out. 🤔

Re: Network password change

Thank you MisterW, Dan_the_Van, and HPsauce for the corrections and clarifications in your replies. Genuinely grateful here.

I had made my (erroneous, I see) note about network password and account password getting out of sync from a conversation with PN tech support some years back (and to be honest, I wasn’t going to test it r.n. as I’m currently mid-upgrade waiting for Openreach). I did trip up over the acceptable password characters once, thankyou v much for the reminder HP, but didn’t note the details. 😀
