MG7K and MG7K2

Good Afternoon,  My Plusnet WiFi regularly switches from MG7K to MG7K2 and back. No idea what this is all about but am curious to know why and if it can affect the running of anything. Anybody out there more intelligent than I, who can clarify this?

Re: MG7K and MG7K2

@BertieBassett Which router do you have, and where do you see this 'switching'?

Re: MG7K and MG7K2

Thank you for your reply. Plus Net Hub One? . I notice on it the wifi Apps on our iPhones and on my laptop in the usual Apps where you can see which wifi services are available and where the device is connected. The reason I ask is, I noticed it when one of my Apps kept throwing me out and I had to constantly sign in again. May be coincidental and unrelated though. As you can tell - IT expert I ain't. 🙂. Thanks

Re: MG7K and MG7K2

I have a suspicion - that your devices are switching between the 2.4 and 5Ghz bands. Don't take that as gospel, as I have no 'hands-on' experience with the PN Hubs, but it is a reasonable assumption.

I'm fairly certain @Dan_the_Van or @MisterW would confirm it, though.

Are you using a wifi extender?

Re: MG7K and MG7K2

Thank you. Yes - 3 little round plastic things around the house entitled "TP - Link" . Recommended to solve a weak signal in the North of the house. They come with an App which sort of gives an update about them. As I say, I wouldn't care particularly - unless it has a negative effect anything. Just seemed a bit weird.

Re: MG7K and MG7K2

@BertieBassett I don't think the TP-Link equipment is the culprit here. Apple devices especially, and any dual-band kit, will have a habit of selecting the 'best' band, especially if it is moving around your house.

Re: MG7K and MG7K2

@jab1

That might not be so clear cut.  MG7K does not like like the typical Hub1 SSID.

If MG7K and MG7K2 are distinct SSIDs for each of the TP-Link 'extenders' then the device will be roaming the best WiFi signal (on whichever SSID) it can pick up and is permitted to connect to.

Having multiple SSIDs on the same network will not give the same seamless roaming as would be experienced if all the stations were on the same SSID.  It would be more appropriate to set all of the WiFi APs to the same SSID with the same access code.

Re: MG7K and MG7K2

I bow to your greater knowledge, @Townman 😀 - I've only ever used a TG582N on PN, so have never seen Hub1 (or 2) SSIDs except when looking at connection data when there have been questions raised and that info posted, which I  usually ignored anyway.

@jab1

Unless changed by the user, Plusnet WiFi SSIDs are typified by 6 alphanumeric characters.

I therefore suspect that these are the SSIDs of the WiFi APs unless the OP has customised their WiFi SSID on the router ... in which case your analysis could be equally applicable.  The Hub1 does have the ability to have different SSIDs for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, the Hub2 does not.

Yea, just discovered my old 582N details - 4A614D in that case. 😀
