I’ve just been looking at options.  It seems I can upgrade to SOGEA for five pounds less than what I’m paying now.  I will lose my landline but I rarely use it so it won’t matter. If I upgrade will it affect my broadband, can I use the same router?

Ring the Plusnet Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 and negotiate a new contract. This number is normally answered quickly. They will answer your questions..

Do you have a contract with BT that might invoke cancellations charges?

Upgrade to what? The Hub2 is designed for both FTTC and Full Fibre.

I don’t mind not having the landline, I would rather do this in one move.  I don’t think I’m tied into a contract with bt they just bill me once a quarter for line rental, it’s been that way for years I have never signed a contract.  Can I still use my hub one or two with SOGEA?  Will I be able to continue to use broadband whilst the switch is made?

Your Hubs will work with SOGEA - nothing changes as regards the broadband component, and your connection should have no downtime, AFAIK.

Great I’d prefer to keep my hub one. Thanks to all for the help, I will contact Plusnet tomorrow and get the ball rolling. Better start looking for a mobile but that’s another thread.

You may be on a 90 day contract / notice with BT for the landline if you pay quarterly. When I was on the FTTP Trial with PN I had a 30 day notice account.

 

I would phone BT first and ask about cancellation charges - making sure you tell them you're only asking, not cancelling the landline.

 

Might be worth getting the mobile sorted first before changing.

I can use a work mobile in the interim but I’ve realised I have some work to do first as my credit card company and another company use my landline to give me a code for access and authorisation of purchases, so I need to change those first before I can change my Plusnet account. That will give me some time to do some research about mobiles. Nothing is straightforward, feel sorry for those who have alarms etc linked to their landline.

For about £7 you can upgrade to a Hub 2.

I’d rather keep the hub  one as I can disable the Wi-Fi whereas I don’t think you can on hub two unless it has now been incorporated as standard firmware.

Hub two firmware v0.08.00.08297-PN included the ability to turn off all wireless transmitters, the current version is  v0.10.00.04201-PN

Not sure what hidden Wi-Fi networks are. Currently there is 2.? And 5.? On my hub one.   As long as I can turn off all Wi-Fi myself. I only need to turn it on for an hour or so to update work mobile.  What would be advantages of 2 over 1?

The Hub Two has some notable differences to the Hub One

1) Only three LAN ports
2) Both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wireless share the same name (it is not possible to split them)
3) Improved WiFi performance
4) Can be configure to use your preferred public DNS providers (or use your own local DNS server like pi-hole)
5) Can be configured to respond to remote ICMP (ping), this allows the use of Thinkbroadband Quality Monitor
6) The option to export event logs and status screen as a csv file, which is useful for fault finding
7) Does NOT support router or dsl stats applications
Cool Can be configured to 'bridge mode' (modem only), allows for cleaner implementation of a mesh system or 3rd party router

N.B Hub One and Two share the same power supply specification and are interchangeable
