Re: Intermittent slowdowns

I've never had a brilliant service. There have always been resets, sometimes weeks apart, sometimes several times in a day.

The original Hub 1 routers were the worst. I was with Vodafone (BB) for a while and IIRC, that was fairly stable. I can't remember what router that was. I was with John Lewis for a year and their Zyxel router seemed more stable, perhaps going a month or more without resetting itself.

When I renewed last March I paid for a new Hub 2 router, and that's been great, up to the last 2 months.

I had assumed that's what FTTC broadband was like.

The problem is a different problem than previously. Before, as I said, the connection would disconnect entirely and wifi would drop. Now, the connection & wifi remain, it (the BB speed) just slows to a crawl. The only way I know somethings happening is that it takes ages to load a webpage or an email, streaming goes into pixellated mode before giving up, etc.

Re: Intermittent slowdowns

@hugonebula  -  what is the model name/number of the Zyxel router ?

@Dan_the_Van  - does the Plusnet Hub 2 GUI have a live graph of traffic going through the modem ?

Re: Intermittent slowdowns

OK. Sounds like, and I emphasise 'sounds like' your Openreach circuit is a bit dodgy - the only time my connection 'fails' is when my ISP does any re-routing - usually very early morning when I couldn't care less - or when there is an issue at our exchange or round our chamber/pole. Fortunately that is rare.

Afraid I can't think of much else in the way of help, but as I said above, the lack of 'DSL down' events prior to a corresponding 'DSL up' is strange.

10:15:33, 09 Nov. WAN Sensing Auto sensing Running
10:15:33, 09 Nov. WAN connection WAN2_INTERNET_PTM disconnected.[ERROR_NO_CARRIER]

Re: Intermittent slowdowns

That's more like I would expect - there is a definite 'DSL Link down' message in it. Are there any messages prior to that in the same time frame?

Re: Intermittent slowdowns

OK. I still think it is an Openreach network issue, but will wait for @Dan_the_Van to comment before I say anything further.

Re: Intermittent slowdowns

There was another about four weeks before that:

14:30:25, 09 Oct. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=14116kbps, Up Rate=1155kbps; SNR Margin Down=8.8dB, Up=6.1dB
14:30:23, 09 Oct. PPP: Sending PADI
14:30:18, 09 Oct. PPP: Starting PPP daemon
14:30:17, 09 Oct. WAN Auto-sensing detected port DSL WAN
14:29:56, 09 Oct. SIP WAN DOWN
14:29:55, 09 Oct. WAN Sensing Auto sensing Complete, interface selected
14:29:55, 09 Oct. WAN Sensing Auto sensing Running
14:29:55, 09 Oct. WAN connection WAN2_INTERNET_PTM disconnected.[ERROR_NO_CARRIER]
14:29:54, 09 Oct. PPP: Stopped PPP daemon(0,1,5)
14:29:54, 09 Oct. PPP LCP Send Termination Request (User request)
14:29:54, 09 Oct. PPP: IPCP down
14:29:54, 09 Oct. PPP: LCP down
14:29:53, 09 Oct. DSL Link Down: duration was 12358 seconds

No entries for about three hours before.

Re: Intermittent slowdowns

Only 'interesting' bit of that is the elevated D/S SNR, but it kind of strengthens my suspicions about it being an Openreach problem.

Re: Intermittent slowdowns

To correct myself:

Before, as I said, the WAN connection would disconnect entirely. The wifi wouldn't drop, but any device connected would show the message 'no internet' or similar.

Now the connection appears to still be there, just down to dial up speeds or lower.

Re: Intermittent slowdowns

It (the WAN connection) has certainly totally dropped in both those logs.

And that was what used to happen, either monthly, weekly or daily.

Re: Intermittent slowdowns

You say you replied to the PM from @James30 , but appears not have reached them, as the message from @adamwalker infers. I'd try sending the reply again, as this does need Plusnet intervention. and I assume the information James requested would help them to help you.

@hugonebula

Using the Zyxel VMG8924, can you post a screenshot of the LATENCY and SPEED results after running this test  -
