It looks like the OP is downloading binaries from the Plusnet usenet server (he moved to Plusnet after Zen stopped doing binaries).
In less than 30 days time he won't have an issue with the speed of downloading from the binary newsg...!

I don't think the OP specified which news service he was using & Jamesh didn't ask, so it's possible that he too was using the Plusnet server 'in error'. I had originally assumed that he was using a 3rd party service, because at that time I didn't know that binaries were temporarily available from Plusnet.
The problem he complained of hasn't been confined to the Plusnet server, unfortunately.

Thanks to Simon M and jelv for comments about Astroweb. I've had a look at their site and the 180 GB for $25 (say £18) looks to be a good deal. I hear your comments about seeing how it works on Plusnet, but I'm quite happy to leave mega downloads running all night, so it must be worth a try at 10 pence a GB!! I'll wait until Plusnet finally dies, though. Cheers
