Notification of changes to Metronet's Usenet feed

« on 20/07/2009, 11:05 »
The following announcement has just been posted to Metronet's Service Status feed and an email is on it's way round the customer base.

Quote from: Metronet Service Status
As a valued Metronet customer we give you access to thousands of newsgroups using the server address news.metronet.co.uk

The newsgroups that you have access to generally come in two flavours: those that carry binary content, and those that don't. Binary groups allow content like image files, archives and computer applications to be posted to them whereas text-only groups don't.

Historically we have always provided customers with access to both the binary and text-only newsgroups however this will soon be changing.

In 30 days time access to binary newsgroups using our news server will no longer be possible, however you will still be able to use our news server to access text-only discussion groups. This decision has been made due to the relatively small number of customers we have using the service compared to the operational and maintenance costs associated with it.

We would like to make it clear that this change will *not* affect your ability to use your Metronet Internet connection to access binary newsgroups using other third-party news server providers.

Kind Regards,

Bob Pullen
