I haven't forgotten abut this yet - just haven't had time to move lappy to routerand faff about, but hopefully I'll have a chance around 3.
A quick Speedtest.net check earlier this morning gave around 4.6Mbps.

Re: Does this make sense?

Sorry for the delays - again - but today is 'just one o' them days' Smiley
Anyway, here are the same 3 sets of figures, run from the laptop connected by ethernet.

Re: Does this make sense?

Those don't look too bad.
I'd strongly recommend removing your telephone number from the screenshot as it is publicly visible on here

Re: Does this make sense?

I think we've now established that there is nothing wrong with your connection, it's just the wireless that is restricting the speed. Next step would be to check if there are people near you using the same channel and try the channel that looks the quietest.

Re: Does this make sense?

@ Gigabit - It's a DG834Gv5 with latest firmware
@ jelv - inSSIDer shows only 3 connections in this area - me and one other on C1 and one onC6. Whats your suggestion for me to choose?

Re: Does this make sense?

C11 should then be completely clear of others.

Re: Does this make sense?

Couple of snaps after a channel change.  Smiley
I know this hasn't been mentioned before, but as it's a relevant after about 8PM SNR looks very low, and usually means I may as well give up on using the internet. Comments?

Re: Does this make sense?

On good lines BT will set the target at 3db which will mean it will vary above and below that. If you run RouterStats, on the telnet page you can see the error counts. Providing you don't start seeing lots of errors logged having the noise margin approaching 3db is nothing to worry about.
If you getting a conflict with someone else on the same channel it might just be that after 8pm is when they are using theirs heavily.

Re: Does this make sense?

Thanks jelv.
Having swapped channels this morning,
I'll see what happens tonight. It's not a major problem as by that time I'm usually offline, but just at odd times I need access to help family with queries.

Re: Does this make sense?

OK -  speed issue now resolved - the MyBroadbandSpeed tester is reporting around 5.2Mb,  which is quite adequate for me,
BUT and it's a big BUT, I can only surf from 0700 to  1900. As can be  seen from the RouterStats stats below, SNR drops steadily  evening (sorry there's none for yesterday evening) and gradually come back up in the morning.
Before anyone asks, there is NOTHING changing at home during this period, s I can only assume something external is happening - but I've no idea what that could be.
@jelv - I didn't think RouterStats could telnet into the v5 ?

Re: Does this make sense?

If you resync when the noise margin is around 1db what sort of speed do you get, would it be adequate?
I wasn't aware that router stats couldn't telnet on the V5 - another reason not to change from my V1!

Re: Does this make sense?

No idea what speed I would get at an SNR of 1db - not tried that.
However, when I got home last night (at around 2050) - the router was showing 0db. I watched it sit there f or about 5 miinutes, then gave up  and ran backups on both machines before going to bed.
TBH - when this happens, so long as I don't need internet access, I find it easier to do something else.
Still curious to know why I can almost set my watch by it, though. Undecided
