Broadband speed has dropped again

Hi, hoping anyone can spread any light on this issue.

I have Fibre Extra and currently, my maximum download speed using the BT wholesale speed test is 40.2Mbps with an upload of 19.75Mbps.

Previously I used to get just less than 50Mbps to mid 50Mbps, nothing has changed on my setup, this speed test is over a CAT6 connection to a non-consumer router running OpenWrt and has been stable for ages, the only recent change is that I have signed up for a new 18-month Fibre Extra contract and since then my connection has been more like my old Fibre non-extra connection I had previously.

I have checked with Plusnet and they have confirmed that there is no fault with my line and that my package is Fibre Extra.  I have also tried the connection with a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X running the latest firmware and the connection speed is the same.  I have no SQM/QoS enabled when carrying out the tests.

This is what Plusnet chat said in 2019 when I had an issue:

Connor:

Test Outcome CodeGTC_FTTC_SERVICE_0000
DescriptionGEA service test completed and no fault found .
Main Fault LocationOK
Sync StatusIn Sync
Downstream Speed61.7 Mbps
Upstream Speed20.0 Mbps

Currently, the BT additional diagnostics show that the IP Profile for your line is 42.59 Mbps download and IP Profile for your line is 20 Mbps upload, is this an issue with DLM?

Re: Broadband speed has dropped again

Hi there, I've just had a look into this for you and can see DLM has made a change over time due to disconnections taking place quite frequently.

I've also performed a line test which shows "impairment in copper joint" so we'll need to get an Openreach engineer out to work on that for us. Can you let me know your availability within these slot times please?

AM = 08:00 to 13:00 or

PM = 13:00 to 18:00

We can book those slots Monday to Friday (excluding the bank holiday tomorrow)

Re: Broadband speed has dropped again

Hi, is it possible for you to carry out a remote DLM reset first, I suspect the number of disconnections is due to configuration on my end that required a number of router resets locally.

Happy to arrange an OpenReach engineer, will he need to enter the premises or will the work be at the cabinet/externally?

Re: Broadband speed has dropped again

Hi there!

I've done a DLM reset for you which should take effect within an hour but could be up to 24 hours.

It's probably worth arranging an engineer though if we've detected an impairment in the copper joint.

Despite appearances (i.e. the suspect copper joint likely not being in your property) we'll need to arrange the engineer as part of a visit to access your property so they can carry out a full investigation.

If you can let me know when you'll be available, I'll be happy to arrange it for you. Smiley

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.
