BT Openreach DSL with Plusnet WiFi Box

Hi,

My neighbour has the Plusnet 'Fibre Unlimited' package and the physical connection has a Openreach socket on the wall with a phone and a broadband 'port'.  The broadband port on the wall is connected to a BT Openreach DSL box and the the BT Openreach DSL box is connected with a Cat5 cable to a Plusnet box which gives WiFi capabilities.  All devices in her house connect to a PLUSNET SSID and the BT Openreach DSL box does not appear to support WiFi at all..  it's just a modem-router.

This seems like a very strange config... is this how it was done 4 or 5 years ago?   I don't want to tinker with the devices as they are not mine but couldn't the BT Openreach DSL box  be removed completely and just use the Plusnet box connected to the Openreach wall socket?

Tnx.

Yes. The BT  box is just a modem. The Plusnet router probably doesn't have a vdsl modem and so the btnmodem is needed for fibre(fttc)

@SC-UK

You can check here what the modem/route is.

https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/router-setup-guides/

If it's a HubOne then it doesn't need the "modem" only unit. This is probably the modem - https://kitz.co.uk/routers/hg612unlock.htm

It could be kept for possible future use or sold on 3Bay

Fix

Thank you Mr.W.  You are correct - it is Fibre-to-the-Cabinet in the street and copper for the 'tail' to the wall socket.

Does this mean that PlusNet do not provide an all-in-one VDSL / WiFi Router of their own and they rely on a 3rd party device for FTTC configs - or does she just have an old config and not the latest kit?

They do have an all in one modem/router. She just has an old configuration
