Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

Problems connecting TG582n to Asus RT-N66U.
I have a Technicolor TG582n and I'm trying to connect a new Asus RT-N66U for better WiFi. This is my setup (Powerline is TP-Link ethernet-over-power adapter, they are transparent)

This is what I had:
[tt]ADSL > TG582n > Powerline -...-> Powerline --> PC[/tt]

This is what I want:
[tt]ADSL > TG582n > (WAN port) RT-N66U (LAN port) > Powerline -...-> Power line --> PC[/tt]

This is the only thing that seems to work:
[tt]ADSL > TG582n > Powerline -...-> Powerline --> PC
        |
        +---> (WAN port) ASUS RT-N66U
[/tt]
I've tried lots of ways to connect the RT-N66U to the LAN, but when it tries to automatically detect the internet connection, it says that there is a duplicate use of 198.162.1.1, reconfigures and then disappears from the network. The only way to recover is factory reset.
Can anybody help?

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

You need to set up the TG582N first - and then configure the RT-N66U.
Do you want to use the RT-N66U as an access point or as a router (using your TG582N as a modem only in bridge mode)?

As a router.

This is going to be tricky...
Have a look at this thread: http://community.plus.net/forum/?topic=105753.msg902252
You need to configure the TG582N first.

You need to configure the TG582N first.

If I do this and it goes horribly wrong, is it easy to reset the TG582N to default settings?

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

Finally replaced my constantly rebooting TG582n with an Asus N66U. Much more stable already (I was getting reboots about hourly before).
And, as a bonus, it seems a touch faster when running a speedtest - like I was at the top end of what a Thompson would handle, before I was getting around 60-65Mb/s, now with the N66U...

Yes, I believe so. It is probably worth double checking though or saving your settings first.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

hi,
sorry to butt in on this thread but I have had it bookmarked for a while with the wish of getting rid of PN's 2 piece's of junk they give away.
So,
I have FTTC with an Openreach router feeding into a tg582n giving currently a 73 up/14 down with a ping of 27
I assume the full code for this router is the Asus RT-N66U ?
Will this be compatible with my feed and will it allow me to ditch the Openreach router as well as the Thomson?
Is this thing fairly easy to set up from the box?
Finally, this thread is reasonably old and technology marches on.  So are there any other branded routers for the £100ish mark that could be a viable or better alternative?
Much obliged for your time
Steve

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

Hi Andy, yes the full name for this router is the Asus RT-N66U. It is only a router (not a modem) so in your current set-up will only replace the TG582n. I'm not on fibre yet so use mine with an ADSL modem but as far as I know it should work fine with your Openreach modem. Set-up for me was very straightforward.
Not sure about your last question, sorry.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

There's a new update (3.0.0.4.374.5517) with a large number of important security updates - http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?slanguage=en&m=RT-N66U+(VER.B1)&os=8. I strongly suggest anyone with this (or any other Asus router) updates their firmware.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

Does anyone know if you can connect a Mac formatted USB stick of hard drive to the USB ports for network sharing.  It would be good if I could share my media over the network.
Thanks.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

Hi
It doesn't support the OSX file system (HFS+) - http://event.asus.com/2009/networks/disksupport/
I would just format the USB stick is FAT32, which will then work with your Mac and Asus.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

Am I correct in thinking that some versions of the N66 do have a built in modem?
Looking online it seems that the DSL-N66 has a modem - is this suitable for FTTC or only ADSL?

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

If you want something really fast then buy the RT-AC68U.
