Hi all,
As far as I understand, the use of PPPoE vs IPoE (DHCP) is ultimately an ISP-level decision rather than something controlled by Openreach.
Given that, I wanted to ask if Plusnet has any plans to move from PPPoE to IPoE on FTTP services in the future?
PPPoE works, but it does come with some drawbacks — reduced MTU (1492), added overhead, and higher CPU usage on routers, which can become more noticeable at higher speeds. IPoE, on the other hand, allows full 1500 MTU, lower overhead, and simpler setup.
Other UK providers (e.g. Sky and CityFibre-based ISPs) are already using DHCP/IPoE successfully, so it would be interesting to know if Plusnet is considering a similar approach as speeds continue to increase.
Would appreciate any insight or roadmap updates on this.
Thanks!

Hi @rahi-rahi.
Thanks for coming to the community.
We’re always reviewing our network technologies, but we don’t currently have any updates to share around IPoE on FTTP.

Not quite!. If the ISP uses BTWholesale WBC(Wholesale Broadband Connect) product then it must be PPPoE. To use IPoE , an ISP must have their own backhaul from (I think?) the Openreach MSAN.
Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.
