230M from exchange, speed is dire

I got an email when I signed up saying;
Estimated line speed: 7.5Mbps Current line speed: 7Mbps
I was a bit disappointed given its an "up to" 20Mb product but then yesterday it's dropped to 1.5Mb.  I'm literally 5 mins walk from the exchange so don't think the line can be that long, is there anything I can do?

What are your line stats from the router?
What does a BT speedtest give you?
Just because you are near the exchange does not mean that is the route your telephone wire takes. It may be much longer than you think.

At a guess - something connected to the telephone line isn't filtered
Can you try the test socket with nothing else connected and report the stats again

Re: 230M from exchange, speed is dire

Hi Allan,
I've just ran a line test and your attenuation is 20dB, which sounds about right. The problem here is your sync rate. Once you're in the test socket give me a shout so I can run another test.

Hi Allan,
Tested at 16:35 and still syncing at 1952k. If you were still in the test socket then I'm flummoxed. You would need to revisit the fault you started to open and finish answering the questions.

Re: 230M from exchange, speed is dire

Well apparently 1274Kbps is within the acceptable range so apparently I don't have a problem in BT's eyes but I'm just confused how I've gone from 7.5Mbps to a profile of 1.5Mb?  Or should I continue with the fault checker regardless?

Re: 230M from exchange, speed is dire

Continue with the fault checker - all the BT speedtest is doing is comparing your speed with the IP profile
Did you note the upstream speed when connected to the test socket

Hi Allan,
Forgive me if you've already done this but have you changed the filter? What router are you using, and are you able to test another one?

It's a Belkin Surf N150 from Argos, only one filter in the box.  Where could I get one?
