Re: new router advice required

here a link that may help.  I think you just plug in the nas to a spare port and this link show a problem with vista operating vista.  somthing to do with  set the MTU to 1476 on Vista and all is well for it to work wireless under vista

My boss has a speedtouch 585 and is nas device is used as abackup device so the kids dont crash his whole business when losing files
But pierre_pierre  again says the routers not fast enough but do download speeds on the box work in real life.  i.e gov test shows my new car does 59mpg but I only get 51mpg

not much use to the OP then he wants 58M

I was quite surprised to get a peak of 3MBytes/sec over wireless - that's probably about 30Mbits/sec
Obviously there's overhead with a slow disk drive (only 7200 rpm) plus protocol overhead.
I suspect a windows (SAMBA) version would be even slower.
I was using nfs.

Re: new router advice required

Then he will need some wire that's faster than 100Mbits won't he?

You stated a speedtouch was only 58mbps which was a min requirement by op so the router needed to be faster.  So I said their are faster routers but the speeds on the box are max speeds under the best conditions what router gives 99% of the advertsied speed?  To make it easy for you to understand I said my mpg for my car GOV state 59mpg but I only get 51mpg.
Lets try an other way for you plusnet advertise speed up to 8mg for download so who get 8mg?
Get the point?

Re: new router advice required

I have read through ever entry to this thread and no where is there any evidence that the speed touch has
A a wired NAS capability
B any clue to its lan speed
My comments have all been that it does not meet the requesters requirement
Now read Roger Loxtons comments

Re: new router advice required

@Pierre - the first review you linked to showed clearly that it meets the stated requirements.
It states it supports 802.11g, which is the standard for a 54Mbps WiFi connection, it also states that it has 4x10/100 Ethernet ports, which are stated by the OP as a necessity to connect his NAS via a wired connection.
I'm at a loss as to why you would link to a review showing that the recommended router meets the requirements, and then complain that it doesn't.
What exactly is your point? - Have I missed something obvious?

Re: new router advice required

sorry if I am misunderstanding but the way it is written
Quote
54mb and above
wired network connections for NAS

if that is the same as what you say OK, but neither I nor Puddy stated that

Re: new router advice required

Thats the joys of IT you get the info that the OP knows, and you have to work out the rest, or ask further direct questions to fill in the blanks. You need to understand what is meant by "54mb and above" - what else would it relate to other than WiFi speeds? I can't think of anything, thus it seems reasonable to assume that it refers to 802.11g as a min requirement, there doesn't seem to be enough doubt to request further info from the OP IMO.
"wired network connection for NAS" is very unlikely to be referring to a token ring ethernet since they are so rarely used these days that I've never seen a router incorporating connections of this type (ie - coaxial networking) - so it stands to reason that the only likely requirement inferred is for a 10/100 ethernet connection. (Possibility of GB networking being a requirement I suppose, or even fibre networking, however these are more specialised - thus if they were what was required, the OP would have probably had advanced knowledge, and would have known to include them specifically in the SoR.)
As you say, its a bit of guesswork to come up with those answers, but there isn't a logical alternative for either, and certainly not another one that is more likely, thus stating that the suggested solution is not compatible with the SoR is disingenuous to say the least. (Again - IMO)
Perhaps it would have been better to ask for further clarity in the SoR if you felt confused about what was really required, rather than telling people that the suggested solution was not compatible with the SoR.
