Re: Slow Speed

Let us compare the results
Normal
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3584 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 36 db 8 db
Noise Margin 4 db 24 db
Test Socket
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5376 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 37 db 8 db
Noise Margin 9 db 24 db
Your sync speed has increased from 3584 to 5376 with an increased noise margin. This increase in noise margin isn't unusual as what probably happened is that the results from the normal socket were from a last sync in the late afternoon/early evening and it synched at 3584 kbps with a noise margin of 9dB which subsequently reduced to 4dB as it got dark (noise margin usually drops under those conditions - but not as much as this)
To simplify - using the test socket increased your synch speed by a significant amount and if you did a resynch in the day time from the test socket it would be even higher.
What does this tell us - the problem is with your internal wiring unless it changes when you plug the phone in.
Are there wires attached to the rear of the part of the socket you unscrewed and how many are there.

Hiya Jim
Plugged phone back in and there are four wires at back of the plate there is a black wire but not connected.

Re: Slow Speed

That answers it - it's either your phone or the filter assuming you are still using the test socket

Re: Slow Speed

Then its definitely your internal wiring.
Lets ask the obvious question first.
Do you have anything plugged in to the extension wiring such as a Sky box, another phone, fax machine, monitored alarm system
If you have a digital camera can you take a picture of the back of the removable part of the faceplate and post it here. If you don't knoew how to select Additional Options and then browse to the picture on your computer - the screen looks like this

Re: Slow Speed

Hiya Jim
Here is the photo of the backplate. I have sky but that's in the other room.

Re: Slow Speed

But is the Sky box connection to the phone line filtered
You appear to have 4 wires connected to different terminals in the faceplate.
Ideally you should only have two connected - as the ring wire isn't needed and can cause interference but not usually to the extent you are seeing.
The wires you need connecting are the one to connections 2 and 5 as they carry the signal to the phones and router etc. This link explains it http://www.adslnation.com/support/extensions.php

Morning Jim Yes    the sky is connected to a filter in the other room which has been the case for some years.

Re: Slow Speed

If you disconnect the Sky box from the telephone system does the synch rate improve on a resynch - this is not using the test socket

Re: Slow Speed

Silly question, but how many extensions do you have attached to that master socket faceplate?
I can see that you have 2&5 connected (Blue/White & White & Blue) as you also have 3&4 connected as well which is your ring wire which is prone to pick up RFi (it's effectively a antenna)
Could be worth disconnecting 3&4  from all your extensions and seeing how things are then IMO - Jim maybe could correct me if I'm wrong.
EDIT: DOH - spent so long composing my post, Jim got there before me... Sad

Re: Slow Speed

Remove both the orange wires. In the thread http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,75617.0.html removing the ring wire increased the download speed by approximately 1500kps.
