There may be a simple explanation for this but it has me puzzled.
My new Technicolor router has an IP address 192.168.1.254 and a MAC address beginning 9E-97-26.
When I run a network scan I can see a second device at 192.168.1.253 with an invalid MAC address beginning 9C-97-26.
What's the explanation for this please?

The mac address at 192.168.1.253 will be the file server for attached usb drives.
You could go to "content sharing" in the routers GUI and disable the file server, media servers and FTP server - see if that stops the mac showing.

Ah, I see, thank you.
I'll give it try.
