Re: Upload speed

BTW performance tester does not respond to ping, so I used mtr with the -T switch

 mtr -c 1 -w -z -T speedtest.btwholesale.com

Re: Upload speed

Thanks everyone for your efforts in trying to resolve this. It is very strange and does appear that somewhere along the line I am being limited to 20Mbps upload speed. I think it has now been 10 days as I went live 6th, so they can't say that my network is still settling. It's always been at 20 upload since day 1.

Re: Upload speed

Another observation ...

The purpose of the bufferbloat test is to measure the effect on ping latency (due to packet loss and/or handshaking) when the rate of the test data being sent/received exceeds the available bandwidth of the slowest hop between the customer's PC and the internet.  That slowest hop SHOULD be the customer's modem (ONT) connection to the BT exchange, after which the bandwidth will be considerably greater.  The test provides a way for a customer to mitigate unwanted bufferbloat by implementing data buffering strategies in their router (including QoS, SQM, and CAKE) at the point where the slowest throughput occurs.

@Notoriousxx 's bufferbloat test -

Bufferbloat Test Result D Notoriousxx.png

We are all agreeing that the link between the ONT and the exchange IS working at 30Mbps

AND we know somewhere there is upload speed throttling causing the speed test to limit at 20Mbps,

AND the bufferbloat test SHOULD expect the speed restriction at the ONT - and therefore show 30Mbps, but it isn't.

Now, we can assume that the test PC can easily send hundreds of megabits, and that Hub2's are not known to limit at 20Mb,

it follows that if the PC or router can only push 20Mb into a 30Mb ONT connection, then the "Upload Active" latency SHOULD be zero - because the upload path wouldn't be overwhelmed with transmitted data.

Consequently that means, because the "Upload Active" latency isn't zero, then the slowest stretch of @Notoriousxx's internet connection isn't local, but must be upstream of the fibre termination at the exchange.

This would add weight to @corringham's theory of an unexpected upstream throttle point, perhaps at Plusnet's servers.

Re: Upload speed

I agree. It does seem it's Plusnets end somehow... But in what way, I really don't know.

Unfortunately I suspect Plusnet really don't know either.

This maybe needs someone like @bobpullen to take a look?

Re: Upload speed

Well, perhaps they could drop my fee £10 for me having 10mbps less... 🥲 Kidding, sort of.

In all seriousness, I would like some clarity on what is going on. I am fine with the download speed as I am getting more or less the estimated/minimum, but not the upload... That bothers me.

@Notoriousxx

"That bothers me"

Just a thought is the missing 10mbps actually causing you a problem or is it just you're not getting what you are paying for?

A suggested test would be using a wired connection from a PC setup a PPPoE internet connection following these instructions. https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/921/

The PC LAN port is connect directly to the Openreach ONT

This should help prove if the issue is internal to your property or an external network issue. You may or not see an improvement with the bufferbloat test.

Re: Upload speed

I am not getting what I am paying for. The contract states the minimum should be 27mbps upload NOT 20.

As I have said previously, I have already tried a direct connection via ethernet port from the router to my PC and it's still 20. I have also tested it connected to the BT ONT and it's the same. The pc is capable of higher upload speeds as my Mum's connection gives the PC 40 upload just fine at her house.

" I have also tested it connected to the BT ONT and it's the same"

Sorry but to me it is was not clear you tried setting up a PPPoE connection from your PC to test to see if the Hub or your home network being your issue.

It would be interesting to see results for a traceroute (tracert on a Microsoft windows PC) to speedtest.net from a wired and wireless connection.

Re: Upload speed

Apologies in that case it was not clear.
I am now away for a week, so will need to perform the tracert the next time I'm home. I will update then.
Thanks to everyone who has been trying to help. I will call their CS again at some point to figure it out...

Re: Upload speed

@Notoriousxx  when your PC is connected by Ethernet cable to the ONT (using PPPoE) WITHOUT any router in the middle -

Can you do -

  1. A Windows 'tracert' to waveform.com
  2. Do the bufferbloat test using the Firefox web browser
  3. Do the bufferbloat test using Chromium or Chrome web browser

and post a reply here with the full resulting tracert and the links to both bufferbloat tests (indicating which browser used for each)

Re: Upload speed

Hi @Notoriousxx

I'm sorry to hear about this and how long this has been ongoing.

I'd like to run a speed test on our end direct to the ONT but this would disconnect you temporarily to do so.

Can you let me know when's best to do this?

Thanks - I am away at the moment so you can do this anytime now.

Do you need any of my details?

Re: Upload speed

No trouble at all @Notoriousxx

I don't need anything else at present but I'm not able to run the tests as apparently there's another test ongoing.

I'll try again later on to see if the error is still there

Re: Upload speed

There is no test on going.

The only thing was I called Plusnet last week 13/02/2024 with this issue and the agent, <Redacted>, supposedly changed some things (I don't think they did) and was supposed to take my case and keep an eye on it for 24 hours of "monitoring period", but, I haven't heard anything from them since.......
