Thanks again for your patience MisterW!
I've updated my txt record and the protonmail domain authentication is now working showing the DNS record has updated. emails to gmail are still failing. Will try again shortly and will update my fasthost ticket.
No change to the rejection code - 550-5.7.26

Depending on the ttl value , typically 1 hour , it may take that long before other DNS servers refresh their cache and get the updated record
If Fasthosts have added DKIM keys to your DNS , you need to remove them, otherwise a receiving server MAY believe your email should be DKIM signed and it won't be.

If FastHosts is where your domain is hosted, you would find life much simpler using their SMTP servers rather than Plusnet’s. It’s a big ask to expect a third party to carry the responsibility of delivering email for another domain hosting company.
In another browser tab, login into the Plusnet user portal BEFORE clicking the fault & ticket links

Fasthosts has resolved my gmail authentication issue. They said there was an error with one of the txt settings. I can't see what change they have made so have asked for confirmation as it may help others here with the same problem.
I am in the process of moving my email to protonmail as I suspect at my next renewal I may not stay with PN as superfast fibre isn't available to BT group ISPs (City Fibre only). Will be a pity as I've been a PN customer for >25 yrs.
I do pay FH to host my domains and as is often the case with many support organisations it is a matter of luck that you find somebody who can immediately spot the issue - in my case it has taken a dozen interactions with their support team but we got there in the end.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions with my issues. I'm very grateful for the engagement I've had.
Best regards- Kevin

@KevH one thing you can do to check SPF is to send (from your domain email) a test email to your <account>.plus.com email address. Then examine the headers of the received email, that should indicate whether SPF passes and whether DKIM is being used (it wont be)

The issue was resolved by removing the hostname in the txt configuration as per the attached picture.
I did send an email from my .org.uk domain to my .plus.net account and here's the header (sorry it is long). I can only see a ref to SPF in one of the strings and not sure if this is co-incidence. This level of detail is above my pay grade anyway!

Yes, sorry that might have been partially my fault suggesting that the domain should be in the host field, rather than it being blank to relect the native domain. In my defence it was late and it had been a hectic day!
That's a shame , it doesnt seem to report the SPF status , maybe its due to the fact that effectively its an internal email i.e sent and received by the PN servers, so it doesnt bother to check.
I had hoped to see a section after the 'Received by' looking something like
Received SPF - pass (mailhub-hex-d.mythic-beasts.com: domain of bounces.amazon.co.uk designates 54.240.1.4 as permitted sender) client-ip=54.240.1.4; envelope-from=20240213133320f0db17328771470ea181fd012ae0p0eu-C3ORN1CYTBHHQU@bounces.amazon.co.uk; helo=a1-4.smtp-out.eu-west-1.amazonses.com;

Hi @Gandalf,
Really hope you can help. I was formally with freenetname.co.uk, then madasafish.co.uk and now plus.net.
I believe therefore my domain is hosted and registered with PlusNet.
I've checked on Mxtoolbox and can confirm I have no SPF record.
can you please help with an MX record so I can send emails to gmail.com accounts?
Many thanks
.

The two posts in this thread from @Gandalf refer to personal domains hosted on the Plusnet / F9 platform … which is entirely separate.
You have two choices - try to send to @googlemail.com instead of @gnail.com or move your domain name to an alternative email provider.
The use of the native @maaf addresses will work fine.
