Just a postscript on this topic:-
I think it is misleading to say that it is not unexpected to get only 4.3 Mb consistently when the BT profile is 6 Mb.  As I understand, contention will affect your speeds variably downwards when usage periods are busy.  It does not cap your max speed as consistently as I have described where testing at all different times of day/night show a speed figure that is so remarkably the same, within plus/minus 50 kbps.  This shows a fixed limitation or bottleneck in the flow somewhere -- and merits further investigation (not least by Plusnet).
It would seem that there was some sort of persisting mismatch between the BT profile and what Plusnet was allowing through my connection as I have rebooted just once more (although having done it before) and have now obtained a Sync of 6240, BT profile 5500 and repeatable download of 5300 plus/minus 50.  I am satisfied now that the download speed is more consistent with the BT profile.
What does irritate me is why Plusnet's systems do not pick up and align with the BT profile automatically as it changes and I have to go through all this palaver to get things working as they should.
Anyway, thanks to various individuals in different forums for their ideas and suggestions.

This seems to have raised it's ugly head again; I’m syncing at 5404 have an IP Profile of 4500 and am only getting 1400kbps at the most.
Would Plusnet please explain why my speed is down to 1400 tonight instead of the usual 4250. As you can see by this thread this appears to be a repeating scenario. What are Plusnet’s plans to address this issue?

As pierre suggests we are currently trying to rectify any slow speeds by making slight alterations to the traffic management system. Having said that I've just done a speed test and got the speed below from a 6500 profile. I'm currently connected to THN-AG1. Have you tried rebooting your modem/router to see if you connect to a different gateway and see if the speeds are better? Of course it’s a good that Plusnet are on the case; just not too sure I like the idea of this happening every couple of weeks. Traffic management  is an essential service of an ISP. Put bluntly, I don’t think this should happen so frequently

Hmm odd, looking at your current session you are connected to PTN-AG1 which certainly should be picked up by the gateway checker. Any chance you can run a tracert and PM it to me so I can make sure this is working correctly?

Got these speed test results, as you can see, I used to get, for example, 6445 in September, tried rebooting router  at 18:57 and got SLIGHTLY  better result, not up at usual speeds though

Yep, back the same for me too!!!!.  I really thought things had been resolved, but no, again laggy cr***py speeds, that again even the wife notices. Cannot see what gateway I am on, as the usergroup seems to be down, or my connection is so poor as to be timing out the site.
