New to plusnet

I have just switched over to plusnet today, this only my second move since 1998, from AOL to o2, I had no gripes with o2, I just did not wish to be transferred to sky, as o2 sold sold their broadband and home phone to sky.
I have to say I have been impressed [so far]  all the hardware arrived in a week, the router activation could not have been easier, I remember going from dial up, to broadband then wifi, buying my own netgear router, also my download speed has increased.
So well done plusnet, glad I switched Cool

Re: New to plusnet

I wouldn't get too comftable fella, my connection started great at 80/20 on day 1 and after 2 weeks I'm down to 40/9.
Plusnet support is sub par compared to O2/BE, Im still waiting for a reply to my ticket.
Sorry I switched.

Re: New to plusnet

Apologies for the hijack, Im in the same boat as veefour. I started off at 78/20 with 11ms ping BT engineer said it could handle 96 down . Im now at 58/15 with 21ms ping, seems to be getting lower every week. Plusnet support did say they would put the profile back to 78/20, this was noted on the broadband speed page but throughput was exactly the same. I  dropped session on router, switched off BT box, switched off router and left alone for approx 1hr20mins, no change.
The general impression I get from Plusnet is, well its still fast enough so no problem.

Re: New to plusnet

I think this is more a case of understanding how FTTC works, when it is first installed its provisioned on 80/20(plusnet unlimited) The line is then monitored by DLM from what I understand the ISP's have no control, as DLM monitors the line it will gradually reduce the line to a speed or introduce interleaving until DLM decides the line its fully stable. This could mean no intervention at all if your close to the BT Fibre cabinet.
It should also noted from what I'm lead to believe As more subscribers take up Fibre then the potential for cross take increases, potentially degrading line quality and speeds as take up increases. I think the plusnet original speed estimates do take this future potential cross take in to account.

Re: New to plusnet

@spiritualbeggar,
@kevinandrews is spot on with that explanation. More specific to yourself I've checked and our profile for the downstream speed is in line with BT's so there's nothing we can adjust for you I'm afraid.
Bearing in mind that DLM should uplift the speed when the connection remains stable your connection has seen a few drops of late, is that anything you're aware of?
I'd say it's fault time if not Smiley http://faults.plus.net

Re: New to plusnet

@ AdamWalker/Kevin Andrews,
Thanks for the replies. I am aware of the session drops in the radius graph, The ones on the12/06/13 were caused by the failure of a new router I purchased as a replacement for the Plusnet one.
The router, a Cisco EA4500 just would not play ball with certain sites, so those dropped sessions were caused by resetting of the router. The rest of the dropped sessions were caused by the bedding in of a TPLINK  WDR3600 (Cisco replacement).
Despite their faults, my last isp, Sky, their connection was not affected by dropped sessions (confirmed by tech support) but only on numerous reboots of BT box.

Re: New to plusnet

In that case give me a nudge after the weekend and we'll see if things have improved automatically as we'd expect.

Re: New to plusnet

@Adam Walker, thanks for reply. I will wait until the weekend.
I am also aware that speed drops/latency issues can be caused by new subscribers at the cabinet (ours: ECI 128 Line).
A loss of 20Mb/5Mb and 10ms does seem a bit steep,

I'd not worry too much about that as we've not really seen any evidence to support that but it's something I'm sure we'll keep in mind and be vigilant for.
