Re: Mid Afternoon Dropouts

Hi PhyllisTyne,
This is quite odd, it seems that the automated system has placed a modify order to shift you to the ADSL2+ product with an uncapped upload speed which is why you're seeing this increase.
Have you seen the service stabilise since this change has taken place?

Re: Mid Afternoon Dropouts

It's possible to extract a few more ADSL stats (mainly CRC, FEC, HEC error counts) from this model, with the program available from here.

Re: Mid Afternoon Dropouts

I perceive the concern here is the number of times PPP is being lost...
What I think we are seeing here is frequent resynchs followed a while later with the BT profile delta being applied by the PN automated scripts - this will cause a PPP drop.  These scripts are supposed to run at xx:05 however there is no published information about their execution duration.
These logs show PPP session drop (without xDSL drop) at 09:05, 18:30 and 20:45 all following an earlier xDSL drop.
This issue needs to focus on router stats and internal wiring.  Can you please describe your setup.  Is the router in the master socket?  Is the phone line quiet - dial 17070 option 2.  Are the xDSL drops associated with inbound / outbound phone calls?
I note that on each xDSL startup there are multiple attempts to establish a session - I think we need to understand better why this is happening.

Re: Mid Afternoon Dropouts

Thanks Kevin,
Sorry for the delay. Was out all day yesterday. As I said in post 3 the line is silent and there is no association with incoming calls. At the moment the router is not plugged in to the master socket but it doesn't seem to make any difference if it is. I have just replaced all filters and this morning have replaced cable to router. I will see how that goes. The next thing I will try is using a new unused 582n I have to hand but not sure if I should do this whilst a fault is being investigated by PN. Or should just do it anyway?

Re: Mid Afternoon Dropouts

Hi PT,
I had not reread the whole thread yesterday - today I have done that so hopefully I will not ask already answered questions again.  Wink
Something is not joining up here.  Your perception of issues did not correlate with PN system reports.  PN advised of a change in SNRM which did not match your posted router stats.  Time to ask daft questions to rule out some potential sources of confusion...  Is this forum identity linked to the account which you are having problems with?  Do you have (or have you had) more than one PlusNET account?
Back to sane questions - can you please describe your internal phone wiring - how many extensions - how wired (from back or front of faceplates, daisy-chained or star) - what kind of wire (shape, individual conductor colours) - which pins are connected (see backs of sockets)
A test in the master socket with the faceplate removed would be useful.  Note in this configuration all other phone sockets should be dead.
Routers: the TG582n might be variable for wifi but is is very good for DSL, it gives good stats reports and it is very good for the next (advanced) stage of home diagnostics.  One asked but unanswered question - is your PC windows or a MAC?
If a PC how do you feel about downloading RouterStats and doing some detailed diagnostics using the TG582n?  Can you identify the firmware version of that please - if it is the PN supplied router it might be worthwhile getting a firmware upgrade first.
Wifi performance - how many devices do have connected?  I have at least 10 on the TG582n with no real issues.  But as many report experience is variable.
Kevin

Re: Mid Afternoon Dropouts

Hi Kevin,
thanks for your continued help with this.
The forum account is as far as I know linked to the BB account
I have a master socket in the hallway and a second socket in a bedroom - both fitted when the house was built in 1994. The wiring to the bedroom must be from the back of the master faceplate as there is nothing visible externally.I run an extension cable from the bedroom socket into my office in another bedroom. The TP-Link is currently connected to this extension cable. The extension cable was fitted when I first started using the internet in about 1995. I do wonder about any degradation in the cabling although until this recent episode I have never had problems with routers connected to this extension. The only reason I have changed routers is due to failures and frustration with the PN routers wifi performance when 10-15 devices are connected.
Moving the TP-Link downstairs will now be a PIA for a variety of reasons so I think what I will do is put a new 582n on the master downstairs and see how it goes for a few days. If no problems I will move it upstairs and connect it where the TP-Link currently resides and see what happens. Hopefully this will help determine whether it is a router issue or an upstairs socket / cabling issue. I won't know its f/w version until I plug it in later but will let you know.
I think if I am going to have to go as far as running routerstats and looking behind faceplates I will bite the bullet and go for a fibre install.

Hi Jon,
INTERESTING!  What sort of extension cable is this?  Flat and plugged into the front of the socket?
This is not ideal for getting the very best out of broadband.  Ideally all wires should be twisted pairs, such extension cables are not.  This has the hall marks of REIN / interference pick up, which I think would impact fibre even more so.  This is where router stas comes into its own, it shows you what is happening hour to hour.
Fixing what you have ought not to be too difficult.  To see if there is any material impact of this wiring, (as a minimum) the following router stats at the current location, the bedroom socket and the master socket would be useful - which router you use does not really matter.
Synch / SNRM (noise)  / attenuation.
As for looking at the face plates, all that we need to know is are any wires other than 2&5 connected?  If yes, they can be removed and ought to improve things.
You only need a couple of things to be operating at the margin to trip you up.  The ideal solution would be to fit a proper extension into the study room.
If you were to go for the fibre solution and want to keep the modem / router in the study, you will need to request the data extension with the order - and the fitter will run the requisite cable, most likely internally.  You might needs a works permit for this from SWMBO!  Wink

Re: Mid Afternoon Dropouts

Hi Kevin,
It is round and plugged into the front of the bedroom socket.
If I went for fibre I would temporarily use the wireless router supplied and plugged into the OR modem downstairs. I then intend to get a cat5 socket positioned downstairs next to the OR modem and run cat5 from this to the bedroom. I would need doing professionally as it would probably need some outside cabling and I was thinking of getting to the bedroom via the attic and a switch so that cat5 can be dropped in to any other rooms in the future. I would never get an extension kit tacked around doors and skirting all the way upstairs past SWMBO.
The ideal is to get the master moved into the study but I think this would involve a 'line shift' and I can't see how to get this done as part of a fibre install - at least with PN anyway.
I will stick the 582n on the master later and get some stats. If they are good I will then try straight in to the bedroom socket and then on the extension in the study to see if it is a problem with the wiring from the master.
can routerstats be run wirelessly? I would put it on a laptop or other PC but am reluctant to put anything I don't need on my primary PC which is the only device wired to the router.

Re: Mid Afternoon Dropouts

Hi Jon,
Yes router stats will run wirelessly.
Your mission statement is most useful.  The key thing I determine from that is you have a wired PC and the need is to get an Ethernet connection to it?
Alternative solutions to what you describe are (a) a wireless adapter in the PC or (b) if you (well SWMBO) have no objection to the router being next to the master socket, then some thing like a pair (or more) of Devolo Ethernet over power adapters is a very tidy and flexible solution...
No CAT5 boxes / wires to run (avoids the need for SWMBO work permits)
You can put the remote end(s) where you want them and change your mind without having to redecorate
If you were to move home, you just unplug them and take them with you and set up in the new home in minutes
These come as pairs and individually, as just Ethernet ports or with a wifi AP.  I have the latter, they work like a dream and if set up properly devices roam from one wifi AP to another without you being aware of it.

You can get the master socket moved, typically such works cost around £160 (up to 2 hours work) from BTOR via your phone provider.
When doing these stats tests, can you please include one into the test socket at the master socket (behind the face plate). Whilst there look to see if there are three or more wires connected to the face plate, you only need 2&5 connected.
HTH,
Kevin

Re: Mid Afternoon Dropouts

Yes Kevin,
The office contains my main PC, a microserver and a printer that I would want to be wired. I might be able to get away with wireless and I will see how it goes if fibre is installed. The PC is new and has a wireless AC card. The printer could be attached using a homeplug and I could fit a wireless adapter to the server. However, backups from the PC to the server would be much better wired over GB ethernet. I do have some homeplugs but I haven't been that impressed with their speed and stability so wouldn't want to use them in high speed or critical connections.

Re: Mid Afternoon Dropouts

Jon,
Having explained more of you requirement, how about this - http://www.dabs.com/products/tp-link-5-port-desktop-gigabit-switch-77S5.html?utm_source=google&utm_m... - in the study with all of the kit plugged into it, it plugged into the home plugs to the router by the master socket?
Which home plugs have you got?  There are differing standards.  My Devolos are AV200 (not their best) and I find them generally OK for streaming iPlayer on the PVR connected via cable.
Indeed REIN and SHINE can send you bonkers!

I've seen a few threads recently about powerline networking being a source of REIN e.g. http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=14463.0
