Just Curious About Flickering Internet Router Light

I'm curious why the Internet light was flickering on my router. Just popping out and I noticed it flickering just like it was downloading something. Which is strange as my PC was switched off and it's a wired (no wireless) router. Still flickering a couple of hours later, then it stopped and went back to normal.
Nothing untoward in the router log. No disconnections. Nothing unexpected in the usage stats.
Is it just "one of those things" or does the router know went I'm out and chats with other routers in their plan for world domination.

Hi billnotben,
The router does connect to the exchange to keep the connection alive occasionally but it's not a great deal of data. I'd go with the world domination!

That's what I thought. It's Skynet gathering up its followers in preparation for Judgement day.
