Available bandwidth disappears to nothing every peak period

Uptime: 0 days, 10:17:15
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,032 / 5,636 (this is 9.5 during the day)
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 443 / 9,208
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/GB]: 145.72 / 1.08
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.5 / 20.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 18.0 / 33.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 22.5 / 1.0

Its just dropping off to nothing every evening between 16:00 and 00:00.
I am dropping connections and losing streams etc. Having to redail.
I'm getting a bit fed up ..
Is there a contention issue with your network in my area or something?

Re: Available bandwidth disappears to nothing every peak period

It is probably the very low noise margin and a high number of errors.
One way out of it is to resync in the evening which will give you a lower but more usable speed.
However you should also try the test socket to see if your noise margin drops as badly

Re: Available bandwidth disappears to nothing every peak period

Which is pretty much all I do.
Its not as bad as some so I am not complaining too vociferously here.
Its just annoying.
Cable is so much better than ADSL. I really still don't understand why we are using this overhead line crap in 2011.
Ho hum. Anyway ..

Might be worth having a read of my post here.

Re: Available bandwidth disappears to nothing every peak period

This isn't a new issue tho ..
Its been this way since I joined Pnut in December.
FYO here's my current stats:
Uptime: 0 days, 0:56:52
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,104 / 9,432
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 443 / 9,176
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 2.46 / 41.41
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.5 / 20.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 18.0 / 33.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 25.5 / 10.0
11:20 and all's well.
And will be all day until .. peak tonight. Then it will turn to [Censored] and keep dropping me from Eve and the DNS will turn to jello.
As I said I am not too riled up about it, as its just irritating rather than a major problem. I know there's guys out there for whom a 5k available bandwidth would be 'amazing'. So colour me lucky .. seriously.
But if its going to get worse .. yeah that'd suck.

So did it get worse after we did this?

Re: Available bandwidth disappears to nothing every peak period

In answer to your question Bob: no it did not get any worse.
Available bandwidth is still dropping below line sync speed at peak times though.
In fairness not as low as 5.
Right now:

Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,080 / 7,668
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 443 / 8,887
Which is fine tbh.
I'll hollar if it turns to crap again during the coming week ..  Crazy

Re: Available bandwidth disappears to nothing every peak period

Hello
The "maximum bandwith" figures are estimate figures you would connect at if you disconnected and reconnected at that particular time.
It is related to your "Noise Margin"
Quote
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:  25.5 / 10.0

and
Quote
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:  21.5 / 1.0

Your lines SN Margin varies from 10 in the daytime and 1 in the night time.
Read more information on the page http://www.robertos.me.uk/html/noise_margin_snr_snrm.html
and http://www.robertos.me.uk/html/high_snrm_margin.html

Re: Available bandwidth disappears to nothing every peak period

Then surely a lower signal:noise ratio in the evening should be a good thing?

Re: Available bandwidth disappears to nothing every peak period

The problem is that if the signal to noise ratio reduces too much the router/modem struggles to separate signal from noise (or "talk from mutter" to adapt an old advertising phrase for a sandwich spread). That leads to lots of transmission errors. Retransmission to correct these effectively slows down throughput; if sync is lost the connection drops.
As was said by ian007jen having "Maximum Bandwidth" smaller than the current "Bandwidth" reflects this situation.

Re: Available bandwidth disappears to nothing every peak period

So you're seriously telling me that in 2011 with all our fancy pants technology, we need a line to be busy in order to sustain a decent bb connection?
And that .. I am supposed to accept 55% or so of my throughput at night because .. it gets 'dark' and stuff?  Cheesy Grin

Re: Available bandwidth disappears to nothing every peak period

I didn't say anything whatsoever about a line needing to be busy to sustain a decent BB connection.
Unfortunately copper telephone lines are not even remotely 2011 technology, and ADSL is a best-effort service on the antiquated infrastructure we have. Nevertheless the noise margin swing between daytime and night-time on your connection is much larger than normal, which could indicate a fault.
Why not raise a slow speeds fault at http://faults.plus.net to get this investigated?

Thanks, but I'll just switch to cable at the next opportunity.

Hi reetpetite,
I'm sure we could get it sorted for you if you complete the questions on http://faults.plus.net
