Good article, thanks adamwalker. Just one point, like many technical authors, they tend to forget who they are writing for. I am not well versed in networking so didn't understand what this meant; Quote:- "However, if you have only two computers to connect, you don't need a Wi-Fi access point. You can create a wireless network using Wi-Fi in ad-hoc mode to connect both computers." What is ad-hoc mode? what do I need to activate it? I have bought a router to allow my desktop (ethernet cable) and my wife's laptop (wireless) to connect to the internet. Are you saying I don't need the router?
Thanks again, keep up the good work.

Ad-Hoc mode refers to one computer communicating wirelessly directly with another rather than going via a router.

In your case you need a router for connecting to the Internet and an ad-hoc network is not appropriate. Your desktop will use a wired connection to the router and the laptop a wireless connection. Both computers will be capable of independent operation.
