Has someone forgotten to remove the extra pcl-ag03 entries?

Dear PN. Why not, once a week/fortnight look, assess which 2 gateways have the highest packet loss at peak times and 2 which have the least packet loss each week, and kick them all off at 06:00 or similar. It is clear that load balancing needs to be a continuous task, so why not automate it.

The network only gets out of balance when there is a failure (or when new segments are activated) and so load balancing should not be a continuous task.

hi, sorry to butt in again, but can you monitor the actual speeds your downloading at and not just go off speed tests?

There's plenty of free bandwidth monitors out there. I use this one.

I was using NetMeter, but I've just downloaded NetWorx - it looks a lot better*. Thanks Bob.

Edit: *Just found the option to ignore LAN traffic - great!

The network only gets out of balance  ...

You can look at the 48hour history of packet drops on each gateway to see the patterns are quite different, if the network was balanced, these patterns would be much more similar. I understand at the moment there have been network issues to explain the packet drop patterns we see right now.

When the network is back in balance and they've gone back to plan A start watching the graphs!

I have done historically, I know PN is currently in Plan B, but even when there is nothing PN can blame on other people those charts show the network 'could be better'. That is all I am saying, and it does make a difference to my BBYW1 connection when I find some pages are slow to load, I look at the charts, see which one has least traffic and jump to that for a week or two. I change gateways without rebooting router or anything similar, so it is to do with the Ellanoya on the gateway I left.

I suspect kicking all the users from 4 gateways is a good way to ensure that RADIUS falls over... as has happened in the past when something went wrong and from memory it also took out BTs RADIUS platform.

I assume that all of these, if running on a PC connected to most modern routers, only monitor the traffic to & from that single PC. What we really want to monitor is the traffic through the WAN port on the router, but I assume that can only be done by software (or firmware, in practice) on the router itself?

Yes, I see what you mean!!  Shocked  Undecided

There is a link to a tutorial which looks vaguely comprehensible to us mortals. First thing I need to do is check if my router (an Intertex IX-67) supports SNMP and then find a quiet hour or so for some experimenting!

Now if anyone with MRTG experience fancies a remote config job ......   Wink

I'm always on the lookout for something better been using tb monitor which i don't like at all, if this does ignore LAN traffic i'll be happy.

We're looking better in balance now, still not quite there but very close. Hopefully the speeds across the different gateways will be closer to each other.
