I updated to v9 before I saw this thread. Initially, it caused me a nasty problem. It seemed to be doing time-consuming scans off its own bat, using a process called avgchsvx.exe and intercepting all network activity. When I ended this process, it would restart almost immediately, so all I did was disable link-scanning. However, something has 'cured' the problem. Either AVG v9 was designed to hog resource while it bedded in, or a subsequent update has fixed a bug, but all is now running smoothly.  I'm pleased, because I like AVG -- it doesn't usually interfere with what I want to do, and its scans catch a lot of tracking cookies that Defender and other products don't.

Chris

the install progress does indeed do a full scan to get a "normal" for your set up

There is an AVG FORUM site, that is not connected with Grisoft (AVG makers).....

Also, I think the "hype " about the "deadline" is to con people into thinking they will not be able to "Upgrade" after DEC 1..... Hrmph...!  so what if I get a new laptop for christmas.,.... will I only be able to use AVG 8.5? ? ? ?  Somehow I don`t think so....

another point... I reckon the "pop-up" is advertising the "paid for version"... it certainly does not say AVG FREE 9.0 ....

Either way, I am still using 8.5 and it still updates the data base as normal....

yep. it was harder to disable the link scanner when 8.5 came out. i remember having to do somthing with the install file name before installing.
i installed on my desktop last night and didnt bother with the rest because in there wisdom they now use a download manager  Angry

any way as yet i see no issues with 9. maybe it was worth hanging fire

I have been using the microsoft package for a few days now, after getting sick of my PCs HDD after startup seemingly running for ages. Quickely noticed the PC seems alot more responsive, and snappier, than with AVG9 on.  Bit disapointed, as always used AVG and been happy with it.  TIme will tell if the microsoft package cuts the mustard where it counts, but reviews I have read on it, appear mainly positive.

It is my job to fix computers and I am currently doing quite good business out of fixing AVG 8.5 to 9 upgrades that have gone wrong.  The problems mostly occur on older less-powerful machines  with less RAM.  Microsoft Security Essentials seems to be a good alternative in these circumstances.

Its a shame AVG 9.0 is like this, I always liked AVG free.  One thing I have noticed on my XP systems is that the system tray icon for security essentials dosnt show.  (Xp Sp3).  The processes are running OK, and icons not set to hide.... Fixed it by deleting the registry keys for past items from the registry and restarting explorer process.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283084 for details if this behavior bothers you like it did me  Roll Eyes
