I've had to reconnect twice because my router has lost sight of the gateway whilst its not dropped its connection. Just like I was getting a while back.

We've now raised a priority 1 problem because the CPU on some of the Ellacoya traffic management switches is maxing out (ref: 58649). Your traceroutes point to this as well as the switches sit in front of our edge routers (gateways).

The plan is to reload some of the switches and perform some network balancing to better spread customers sessions across the bandwidth we have available. I'm going to post this to Service Status now...

We'll then monitor the network over the duration of the evening and will back out some changes we made a few months back tomorrow morning if the situation remains unchanged.

Don't know about Browsing through treacle tonight, but Youtube is nigh on unusable.  This particular video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04dMyeMKHp4 is only 4:43 long, yet I've been sat waiting for 10 minutes and it's only 25% loaded!

Steve, I've just checked the CPU utilisation on the Ellacoya switches and some of the pcl switches are close to hitting 100%. Try rebooting to see if you can get on a non-pcl gateway and see if the situation improves.

@Azagoth, that YouTube video's streaming fine for me. The HD version is just about buffering enough ahead for the video not to stutter. I'm on pcl-ag04 at the moment.

well I've managed to get onto pte-ag2

BTW, in my event logs for authentication I'm always seeing a PPP CHAP Receive challenge (rhost = ERX20.Birmingham4) before I get a  PPP CHAP Receive challenge (rhost = PTE-AG2) (or other PN connection)

That's perfectly normal, the first host will be BT. When you connect you authenticate against BT first based on the realm in your username (it will check if your realm is allowed on your line and then where to send your connection to, if its plusdsl.net it will check to see if you're line is allowed to use plusdsl.net and then send the connection to us, if it was btbroadband.com they'd send you to BT).

Things like FB, and ebay are still woefully slow, at least for me. Taking about 15-20 seconds to load.  ... and forget about hotmail, go make a cuppa while that loads up.

Tracing route to www.facebook.com [69.63.187.12]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1     2 ms     1 ms     1 ms  192.168.0.1
  2    57 ms    59 ms    57 ms  lo0-plusnet.pte-ag1.plus.net [195.166.128.64]
  3    93 ms    56 ms    57 ms  ge0-0-0-403.pte-gw2.plus.net [84.92.4.2]
  4    55 ms    57 ms    58 ms  linx.br01.lhr1.tfbnw.net [195.66.225.69]
  5    76 ms    72 ms    80 ms  xe-2-2-0.br02.fra1.tfbnw.net [204.15.22.123]
  6    76 ms    95 ms    75 ms  ae0.br01.fra1.tfbnw.net [204.15.23.218]
  7   152 ms   151 ms   155 ms  xe-4-0-0.br02.ash1.tfbnw.net [204.15.20.221]
  8   152 ms   159 ms   148 ms  te-8-3.csw08d.ash1.tfbnw.net [204.15.22.63]
  9   148 ms   146 ms   160 ms  www-11-08-ash1.facebook.com [69.63.187.12]

It's quicker to RDP to work, and then use the 2mb leased line than do it locally on my 3.5mb broadband connection.  Grin

I was assuming it was microsoft's fault.

Just to add to this, I've been suffering  intermittent very poor evening speeds as well over the past week or so. I tried Azagoth's YouTube video last night at around 21:00 and even the standard definition version wouldn't play without buffering.

My IP profile is 7150 and I'm currently on thn-ag1

My exchange status is Green
