British ISPs restrict access to Wikipedia amid child pornography allegations

Quote
Multiple companies have gone public stating that they implement the recommendations of the Internet Watch Foundation. Not all of these are known to have implemented measures against Wikimedia sites; the major UK ISPs thought to have affected Wikimedia sites are, O2/Be Unlimited, Virgin Media, Easynet, Plusnet, Demon, and Opal Telecommunications (TalkTalk).

Its not new that PN use the IWF to monitor usage, in the case of Wikipedia, is it just those two pages, if so. I dont mind

I believe that the problem is not that the two pages in question are unavailable, but apparently the way in which this is done, through proxies, means that Wikipedia have chosen to ban anyone using those ISP's from editing Wikipedia content.

It is indeed a curious album cover. I wonder what type of customers they hoped to attract with it

Can you edit an entry in Wikipedia? If so, then someone may have changed something since earlier this morning.

more misreporting by the great british press.  not only can i get to the wiki, i can also get to the scorpions site.  plusnet is not blocking anything.  it's wiki that is preventing editing, that's all.

the world is awash with fud these days.  journalists will write any rubbish to attract sales.

No misreporting going on here, I'm a Plusnet customer and I can't view the image at hand. I can view the page but not the image.

Frankly this is disgraceful, I pay for internet access and that's what I want. I don't see my electricity company cutting my supply everytime I fire up the equipment I'm using to build a bomb.

I don't want Plusnets internet, I want the real internet.

In the interests of fairness to Plusnet I found I can view that page including the image in question, however I can not view the image if I click on it.

[Edit] The interesting fact is I had no interest in the subject matter, nor had any intention in trying to view the page until I read the previous posts. After reading them and the press articles I decided to check what the actual position was and now I know. I will just wait for the police to knock on my door later.

Same as Spider here. In fact I could probably download the image if I so chose.

I've no interest in viewing the picture, but I'm annoyed, should it be true, that the proxies prevent UK users from contributing to Wikipedia. The law can be an ass, and I'm willing to accept that Plusnet's hands are tied, but you know, it would be awesome customer goodwill and a positive market discriminator if Plusnet could show some balls/skills and implement either  necessary and sufficient censorship or no censorship. I'm annoyed about the consequences for those who have done nothing wrong.

Of course I apologise if I've got the wrong end of the stick.

probably, you are just banned from one picture that is illegal in the UK and can end you up with a hefty jail sentence

I'm more intrigued by the idea that every access to Wikipedia from 6 ISPs is stuffed through such a limited number of proxies. Proxies which I don't think anybody even knew existed until this one blew up.

The question is, if such an innocuous thing is being censored (I believe it was actually legal when the album was released), what else is being censored and who decides on the censoring ?
