Uploading to Flickr

« on 01/05/2008, 08:30 »
Has anyone else had problems uploading to Flickr? I haven't been able to upload anything in the last couple of days. According to reports on their help forum here http://www.flickr.com/help/forum/en-us/71738/
it may be a problem with UK based ISP's. Mention is made of SQUID but I have no idea what that is.
I have never had any problems until recently and to the best of my knowledge nothing has changed my end. Its not a firewall problem as the upload starts and continues for a few seconds before grinding to a halt.

I had problems this week using the 'Fotofox' extension for Firefox. Uploads seemed to start, then the progress bar just stopped. Eventually gave up and used the uploads page on the site which worked without problems.

Yes I haven't been able to upload for the last two days using flickr tools. Have now resorted to using the uploads page on the flickr site which does work.

Thats what I have had to do. The various responses on the Flickr help forum seem to suggest its a problem with certain UK based ISP's and both BT and Plusnet have been mentioned a few times. I was hoping for a response from the PN team but no luck so far.
Might have to raise a ticket. I have also email flickr direct and waiting for a response from them

Just found another thread here http://www.flickr.com/hel.../en-us/71863/#reply447251 where it seems Plusnet have admitted making some adjustments that are causing these problems.

Hi there,

We've received an email from one of the guys at Flickr about this too. I personally first became aware of problems yesterday. I'm going to do some digging and see what I can find out.

We've got a problem open on this up here in Networks and it is being given priority by one of our Engineers.  We are keen to get this resolved as soon as possible and will endeavor to do so.

Any timescale available for when this might be fixed?

Any updates on the flickr problems? I know it's the weekend so it's skeleton staff but was there any progress yesterday?

I've had problems for several days: just as described by others (perhaps 1 to 2Mb uploads, then  stops, error message internet connectivity or some-such).  I'd appreciate an update on when this might be fixed, and/or work-arounds!!

John

PS independent of up-loader version, also seems to affect web-up-load: E-mail works but clunky)

Hey guys! Anyone had a chance to investigate this problem further? I've got a pile of photos to upload and it's much easier to use an uploader program!

Hi there,

Yes, we've been continuing with our investigations today. Unfortunately though we're still some way off a solution.

Our testing has failed to replicate any problem with the web-based uploader. Uploading photos using the Uploadr tool though always seem to fail - this seems pretty consistent with what you guys are seeing.

Similar issues also seem to be affecting Sky and Virgin Media. I've also seen a report from a Comcast subscriber whose been without the service a week or so.

We've cross-examined the traffic at our side and run a few packet captures etc. We seem to be getting a zero size reply to our IWF proxies however this is almost certainly a symptom of the problem and not the cause.

Interestingly, a Wireshark capture shows that the upload completes successfully whilst the tool itself reports a failure (and obviously the pictures are not associated with your account).

I'm beginning to think it may be something to do with routing. I guess we could try and alter the advertised routes for traffic to and from the Flickr servers however there's a number of things that need considering before we can make such a change.

You might replicate the same issue by creating a set and adding 92 or more items to it, then try making a change to the set.

For me it results in an error message:

There was an error and photos were not saved: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <rsp stat="fail"> <err code="112" msg="Method "unknown" not found" /> </rsp>

I've always thought it was routing issue from wireshark traces and tracerts as well. The web uploadr seems to always use the tiscali network over the USA however the uploadr program uses telia and teleglobe to get there!

I think I'll start using the web upoadr in the mean time!
