OK - you had me totally baffled for a bit! Cheesy

Now for a new one, how do I whitelist?

Thats been raised Jelv under my tweaks problem 50961, we need to make it a little more intelligent so that it doesn't pick up extra new lines on the end Smiley

Evening all!

To catch up from where I left off earlier...

People may be coming home to check their mail. A Service Status update to last nights rollout saying there were a few problems (now resolved) and referring to this topic wouldn't go amiss.

I'll get something out now. Better late than never I guess Embarrassed

All that needs doing is my alais e-mail address removing from within Postini, but I can't do this as the "My Settings" has gone.  Or I could do this if my settings were re-enabled (Hint, Hint)  Wink Wink

Apologies Andy. I started looking at this earlier but got sidetracked with some of the other problems we had. I'll look at it tomorrow.

There is still nothing coming through. Do I take there is still a problem with this?

Seems fine to me. Are you aware that you've switched your plus.com email address off and only email to your domain will get through? I've just sent this and it arrived OK in one of your mailboxes:

Code:
220 Postini ESMTP 210 y6_14_0c17 ready.  CA Business and Professions Code Secti
n 17538.45 forbids use of this system for unsolicited electronic mail advertise

Just a quick query over old fashioned mail groups.  I subscribe to one, for jobs, and mails come to me with the "From" as the original poster (could be any address from the 100s of members and a "Sender" as the mail list.  Does the White list work on both "From" and "Sender" ?

I think it's sender but would have to confirm. Why not give it a try. The bold bit in the header below is what tells you an email has been whitelisted:

Quote
X-pstn-addresses: from <me@privacy.net> forward (user good) [47/4]

That is a gross miss-representation! All bar a handful of customers (probably less than 0.001% of the total user base) are totally unaffected by the removal of the turning off of the spam checking on the mailcore servers. We had advanced warning weeks ago that it was going to be turned off.

There's about 35 customers. I did want to email them to be honest but sadly I didn't get the time to do this. IN retrospect I should have made the time.

Well when is the "All" customer news letter coming out, as I posted earlier about 90% of the user base dont read the blogs or forums and might have been adversely by the changes - in the form of lost e-mail

We were supposed to be sending it today but it didn't happen. Chances are it will go out tomorrow.

What exactly is happening with any and all postini mail that is 'deferred' seeing that according to PN, postini do NOT store messages they can't forward immediately ?

4xx SMTP error. The sending MTA in most cases will reattempt delivery. This shouldn't be happening any more though.

Do PN already know spam has been bypassing postini and coming in direct again BTW ?

It was earlier, but again should be fixed now. The example you've posted was from early afternoon by the looks of things.

Thanks Dan. Do we have a definitive answer on the "deferred" emails. Are they lost forever or simply being held pending release?

Bob - I don't know what you tried but there is definitely nothing coming through on my domain.

Hey, as you had opted out of postini we needed to update the postinOnly flag on your domain to 0. Ive done this (as part of the P1), and this is now working for you.

Postini rejects the message with a 4xx server error. A properly configured mail server will then attempt to send this again later. After so many failed attempts it gives up and generates a bounce. The issue was fixed before this is likely to have happened though.

I sent an email to your domain as per the Telnet transcript I quoted. I then logged into your account using Webmail and the email was there. PM me if you want to know what mailbox I sent it to.

@jelv

If you put the cursor in the blacklist box and then enter a blank line, i.e.hit return, the addresses in your whitelist will be accepted!

12/18 month broadband contracts have been abolished - all Plusnet residential contracts (including for existing users) are now 10 days (however deferred charges such as activation or hardware may have to be paid if you leave within a year)

If the P1 Dan is talking about is Problem 50961 - Customers email getting deferred by the mx.cores then most of your mail should filter through eventually.

Neither should customers be getting any junk bypassing the Postini filter anymore either (apart from those opted out).

I have had 16 old style Spam messages today in my Thunderbird Inbox that should either have been edge filtered or stuck in my IMAP spam box.  None of these are classifed by Plusnet as Spam anything, even though Postini think the x-pstn setting is 1.

Can I asume this is the result of yet another Plusnet major foul up with an untested cut over to a new system wiping out previously good settings?  Of course like BA with Terminal 5 you are all doing an absolutely great job of energetically running round like headless chickens putting right the chaos that your well paid directors should have strategically planned not to have have happened in the first place (did they not think personal involvement in mere non money making trivia like spam filtering was too menial for them).  I see you have also deliberately started a new thread and closed the old one in the hope of losing all those of us whoe were previously interested in this subject. Angry Sad Lips Sealed

Below is an example of the one pieces of old style Spam I have received.

These have continued through this evening and not stopped earlier on as someone at Plusnet inaccurately claimed would be the case.

I note the word MXCore is in the header of all these messages by way of apparent explanation of the schoolboy errors made by Plusnet that have allowed us to once again become spam saturated.

Can we have a realistic estimation of when this will problem will actually be fixed?

I think this is problem 50956: http://community.plus.net....msg508930.html#msg508930

X-pstn-addresses:    from <xxxx@xxxxx.plus.com> forward (user good) [52/4]

is the clue.

Had you added anything to the whitelist/blacklist before the problem was fixed? If so I suggest you re-save your whitelist/blacklist as reading the description of the problem I think there's a chance that might fix it.

I see that whitelisting, blacklisting and quarantine options have now been made available, which is to be welcomed.  However this is just as well as Postini had lately take to classifying email from another relative with the same surname as me as being spam.  I can't think of any good reason for that other than possibly that the return address in their emails did not coincide with the ISP identity of the SMTP server through which they were being sent (Be Unlimited).

Things go wrong, nothing is ever pefect. Especially when the entire exim config has been changed, its very hard to test every single scenario and every single type of email.

Anyway, the problem you are seeing is that email has been spoofed and come from a .plus.com address. We had originally whitelisted all plusnet domains (which was my fault, and if had read the entire thread i have apologised for this mistake and it has been rectified).

Checking the headers you'll see: X-pstn-addresses:    from <xxxx@xxxxx.plus.com> forward (user good) [52/4]

In this instance i have now sorted this personally for you, if anyone else is still seeing spam as being whitelisted from plus.com domains i would suggest going back into the spam tab and clicking update to ensure the whitelisting of our domains have been removed from postini.

No I hadn't put anything in the white or blacklists at that stage and certainly not my own email address.

However most of these emails were spoofing part of my Plusnet domain as being the sending address and it seems that under the new setup Postini now accepts this unless my own domain is blacklisted as the sending address?

OK so I now need to put my main email domain in the blacklist and then whitelist a couple of specific email address variants that my router and Linux box are sending daily emails under (or change those to another address not using my email domain).

Dont blacklist your own email address just yet, i have updated your settings which should have removed the whitelisting of plus.com domains. All emails should now be scanned for spam unless you have set them to be approved senders. Try that, if you continue to get spam through from *.plus.com domains gimme a shout.
