simple to use FTP program and FREE too!

« on 14/03/2008, 21:37 »
I have been having a lot of trouble using the Outlook Express FTP service to upload and service my website.... Having decided to add a new page of about 85 photographs, I did all the preparation work, making the photo album (page) and re-writing the html for the nav links, to include the new page. then transforming all the original pages html lines. I proceeded to upload the new html to each individual page.... easy enough. except, by mistake, I deleted most of the website !.. Not too much of a problem, as I had a backup copy of each page, so I took my time and re-made all the pages, before starting on the "marathon" of uploading all of them... now containing over 750 photographs and three text pages.....

The ftp is not configurable within zonealarm, so it was subject to the vagaries of za and kept "hanging", meaning  I had to sort out what files had been loaded, and then copy and paste the remainder... a very long time consuming job as this happened with every page/album...

Having finally managed to get it all back online, I decided that I had better renew the original backup from the "live" version.... so I decided to "download" the files to another location for backup2.... As usual the ftp kept "hanging", so I did a google, and came up with an excellent FREE software FTP program.... After downloading and installing it, ZoneAlarm asked for permission for it, I approved, and then I selected the whole of the htdocs folders contents all 18 folders and all 750 photographs for downloading from the site for backup..... within 10 minutes job done.... no hang ups, no errors....

you can find this wonderful piece of software here

http://internet-soft.com    it is called   FTP COMMANDER....

Look carefully at the site, as there are 3 versions..... 2 are for sale, and one is free...FTP COMMANDER.... look on the left side of the page for the title (I think it underlined)  click on it, and download should commence.... takes less than 5 minutes on Broadband...

Happy ftp ing!!!

In the past I would have recommended http://filezilla-project.org/download.php

But after a bad experience with the latest version, I would recommend the last build of rev 2.2.32

How about WinSCP? http://winscp.net

There was even a PlusNet forum thread: http://community.plus.net...ex.php/topic,14761.0.html

Personally, I've never had a problem with FTP - like OldJim, I use the FireFox one because it remembers the names of root directories etc.
Command line FTP (as supplied with the OS - even M$) also always works fine.

I think FTP must be just about the oldest protocol in town - unless someone knows different?  Smiley

I've been fairly impressed with filezilla 3, revision 2 had some problems with network paths.

I've used SmartFTP for years, and never had a problem. I've been tempted to try the Firefox plugin, but as long as SmartFTP continues to work, I think I'll stick with that.

FWIW I don't think zonealarm is the problem, I stopped using it when I got XP (It blocked email) and I think I saw the same problems using MS Frontpage.

I think what's happening is PN's FTP has a bandwidth limit and applications that exceed it tend to choke. MS use a single FTP task with no bandwidth control so more often than not it stalls. Using Filezilla I found a high rate of transfer failures but as soon as I set a speed limit it ran smoothly, and once I raised the number of simultaneous transfers to plusnet's limit of four the speed limit really didn't seem to matter.

It can't be bandwidth control.
I've used FTP on distant 2400 bps dial-up modems and on local Gigabyte connections.
It worked on both.

Well, I don`t know what it was that was making the Outlook Express FTP "hang", but sometimes (most) it would "hang" , almost as soon as it had finished "calculating time for transfer of files".....

I could start another run of the same transfer, and it would copy that  for a few pictures/files. then hang again....

When the "hang" happened, the zone alarm was showing "closed" no traffic ....

As soon as I enlisted the help of FTP COMMANDER, and I gave zone alarm permission for it to access the net, NO problem.... as mentioned in the original post.....
