FRING - https://voip.plus.net/login/fring

Curiously, after placing several calls throughout the day the tone changes after only 1 or 2 rings now which is perfectly fine - maybe it was just my network getting used to the new service !?

The way the ringing tone changes I get the impression the first ring type is some sort of handshaking within the Fring/SIP/Internet Cloud and the second type indicates the point at which the call traverses the traditional exchange system to its endpoint as it sounds just like a regular ring tone at that stage.

Must say, call quality is absolutely excellent (over wifi) - at least equal to using a regular mobile/analogue phone  Smiley also, pretty cool to get an email with your voicemail audio clip attached within a few seconds of the call too.

Hi folks,

As I might be acquiring an N95 in the near future ( I get my daughters cast off phones when she upgrades at the end of her contract ) I am interested as to what Fring offers that the built in SIP client doesnt ?

My immediate plans for the N95 on my next break in Portugal are two fold.
   1) to get a PAYG mobile broadband sim and use the N95 as an HSDPA modem connected to my Laptop for internet access.

   2) Utilise the free WIFI areas of a lot of the Algarve towns to use the N95 as a SIP client on my PlusNet voip account
to stay in contact with friends and family in the UK

Cant really comment on N95 native SIP v N95+Fring SIP as I've only used the later.

There is however a lot of value-add with Fring namely MSN/Google Chat/Skype/Fring functionality (+ SIP of course) - all within one easy to manage interface. You can even chat to MSN users if they have their mic connected. Fring also automatically uses your existing contacts within each account. The connection manager is also pretty good - giving a reasonable experience when roaming between different networks ie wifi to 3g for example.

Pretty clever bit of software and one of my 'must have's' for the N95 !

Theres a problem open on that at the moment - does seem to be an intermittent problem, i've counted 3 users who cant see what advert now. Try clearing cookies and cache and see if you can see it.

Rich,

Further to my post about Ad blocking software possibly being responsible for Fring Advert being blocked in the Voip Control Panel Overview; I have just tried your suggestions of clearing the cache, & cookies. I have also Turned off Kaspersky. I've tried Firefox 3 & Internet Explorer 7. I have never seen this Fring advert on my account ever. Even with all of these tests, I couldn't get it to come up.

So, can you add me to the list of people not seeing the Fring Advert. I'm willing to try anything you like at this end to see if I can get it to show, but it sounds more like I am getting a different version of the page to others (for whatever reason!). I've even looked at the page source and can see nothing that looks like a Fring advert in there!

Is there a another way to get the Plusnet specific Fring client? Can you PM me a link to click?

And me.

I don't have a suitable handset at the moment, so I'm not in any tearing hurry. I only mention it to indicate that the problem is a little more widespread.

Would anyone care to post a screenshot of what the page should look like, obscuring any confidential information of course. My page does look rather bald - I wonder if there is anything else I'm not seeing.

I am trying to get started with Fring. From my account overview I clicked on "Click here to setup Fring" and am taken to a page that asks for my mobile number. What part of my number is the country code, please? I have tried all permutations I can think of but keep getting an error message.

Also, I came to this having already installed Fring on my mobile and found it would not register. Do I need to uninstall that version of Fring before downloading a new copy (assuming I can get past the mobile number problem), please?

I used to be conceited but now I'm perfect. ;-)

I was thinking of installing Fring on my son's iPod Touch - just to have bit of a play. Has anyone got it working with PlusNet Broadband Phone? Do I just download the Fring app from the App Store or do I have to go through registration on voip.plus.net? If I do need to register, how do I do this as the first thing it asks for is a phone number and obviously the iPod touch doesn't have one!

Alternatively are there any other SIP applications that people have working on the Touch?

Thanks - Bob

Edit - sorry, one final question (a bit of a long shot this one). Now that v3 of the software supports Bluetooth, has anyone got it working with a Bluetooth headset?

Ok I've given this a go with some success.

Downloaded Fring from the App Store and filled in the registration information. Then configured the sip add-on as follows:

User Id      - 1234567@sip.plus.net:5060 (where "1234567" is your 7 digit extension number)
Password  - your password
Proxy        - natproxy.plus.net:5082

It registered straight away and I was able to make outbound calls and receive incoming ones. My Son is well pleased - he thinks I've converted his iPod Touch to an iPhone Cool. I was only able to test voice one way as we don't have a microphone for the iPod yet but he intends to buy a Bluetooth headset.

There are some big limitations however, the most obvious one being that you can only use it in a Wi-Fi area. Also you can only accept incoming calls when the Fring application is running and it doesn't seem to support tone dialling as I wasn't able to access voicemail ("press 1 for new messages" etc.).

Still it's mighty clever and although it might be of limited practical use, I'm impressed.
