FRING - https://voip.plus.net/login/fring

Sorry to sound negative but IMHO Fring is a non-starter for any mobile phone apart from one made by Nokia.

It has been recognised on Fring's own forums that it doesn't work correctly with most, if not all, Windows Mobile phones.

And it has been that way for at least six months.

IMHO the level and quality of Fring's community support makes Plusnet community look like the Encyclopedia Brittanica!!

As there are virtually no free Wi-Fi portals in the UK, what is the point of struggling with yet more software to make phone calls at home, when you can use PSTN, mobile or regular VOIP?

I have to say that Fring is not for the mass market at the moment - there is a bit of fiddling to be done and its probably only adopted by those that like to have a play with the latest technology...On the plus side - there is an updated version coming along towards the end of Feb which may improve resilience.

There are thousands of possible free wifi sites if you subscribe to www.fon.com or www.btfon.com

Thankyou itsme for alerting me to Fon.

Not for me, alas as I usually don't join things.

Are pubs, restaurants allowed to offer " absolutelty don't have to join anything totally free wi-fi", in order to entice paying customers (for their OTHER goods and services) through the door?

For example, if pub A offered free wi-fi and pub B didn't, then I would be more inclined to frequent pub A and not pub B.

If they're not (as I suspect) couldn't Plusnet come up with a special "Pub Landlord" package. (And get Al Murray to advertise it!)

Do you really use WiFi in a Pub?

Cafe maybe, Hotel Yes. But I can not see myself booting up my laptop in a pub.
(Or is that just a comment on the Pub's near me!)

I get various failures from Fring's SIP on my N91. I'd already installed Fring and installed the link over the top although I suspect it's the same version that I had.

Unlike the X-Lite software there are only 3 things to enter

SIP ID
Password
and
Proxy

What are you using to get this to work? Password is fine, but are you using <SIP ID> or <SIP ID>@sip2.plus.net for the ID and what are you using in the proxy field?

Can't get Nokia's built in SIP on the N91 to work either   Sad Huh? Embarrassed

Using generic Fring on Nokia E51 here. Fring wouldn't register on plusnet SIP with the standard plusnet proxy of nat.plus.net. Had to enter sip2.plus.net to get it to register and then happy. SIP ID is full address, i.e. 123456@sip2.plus.net. I'm not sure why I'd use Fring instead of the inbuilt VOIP, though, as the latter is more efficient in its use of the WLAN or WAN connection. I'd probably only use Fring for Skype if I'm making an international call.

Just had to reinstall Fring on my Nokia N95 and had a few problems. This time round I thought I'd try downloading the application using the BETA portal.

First thing that put me off a little was the warning I got when I clicked continue:

I managed to download and install the app to my phone OK but that's about as far as I got. After opening it and being asked to register an account, I was constantly greeted with the error:

Registration failed please try again!

I'll not go into detail here but this exchange pretty much sums up what my problem was.

Couple of things.

1. The error message was hardly helpful. If it wasn't for Google then I'd have had no idea how to proceed.
2. Why couldn't I just create a new account instead of having to use my old one?

I've passed this information to FRING - we need to eradicate any potential security risk as a priority.

Hi - I have an MDA Vario.  I downloaded the software and got it running very easily, but I can hardly hear the person I am calling.  There also seems to be a lot of noise.  I am connecting via WiFi.  Is this common???.  Thanks

I was excited to see this today - I tried to get it working with the old broadband phone set-up many months ago to no avail.
This time I got it working quite quickly - but the quality of speech is very bad.
The voice is broken and a lot of what is said is lost.

At the moment it is unusable.

I am using an O2 Orbit, and wifi

I will keep on trying and look forward to the next release

For those who have problems connecting through Wi-FI have you followed the instructions in this thread?

http://www.fring.com/supp...;kbarticleid=58&nav=0

Bob - In response to the problem you have seen (I think a few others have seen this problem as well), Fring have provided a few pointers on how to overcome the problem.....

"I have to agree with you, re-installing fring can be frustrating, as I've experienced the same problem in the past.

The simple solution to this is to install fring, via download to PC/laptop and then via cable to the handset.

You can get fring downloaded to your PC during the download from website process, by registering as normal, and then clicking the download via PC box in the bottom right of the next screen.

That's the simple solution, if you want more detail (!) read on .......

A couple of issues are going on here:-

The client is somewhat inflexible as the user nickname and password is tied to the SIM card mobile number
The instructions on the fring site could be clearer - and this would get over the problem.
Let me explain in a bit more detail, then you will see what is going on.

After download of fring, via the website or via an SMS invitation, and during set up of the application you are invited to enter your fring nickname and password.
Your user id within fring is pre-populated to the mobile number the text message (with the download link) is sent to. This user id cannot be changed, its hard coded. The reason for this is that when you loose your nickname or password, you can visit http://reg.fring.com/password/ enter your mobile number (user id) and get the details sent to you.
If you re-install fring on your mobile, and you still have the same SIM card, you have to enter exactly the same nickname and password otherwise you get the "Registration failed please try again!" message
Similarly if you reinstall fring on your mobile, but with a different SIM card (and mobile number) or on a different mobile (with a different mobile number), and you try entering your nickname and password, you'll get the same error message - as fring cannot associate your nickname and password with a different user id (mobile number) for security reasons.
So what can you do if:-

You've got a new SIM card and mobile number and you want to reinstall your old fring account on it
Or

You want to install a new fring account on the same mobile number as your old fring account

There is a solution, which is quite straightforward. There is a third way of installing fring: by downloading the SIS / CAB file to your PC/laptop and installing fring via bluetooth/cable to your phone. This version of fring is slightly different, as it doesn't know the mobile number it is being installed on. When you set up this version on your phone, you are prompted to enter your user id in addition to your nickname and password. This means that you can enter your old fring user id on a new mobile number, or enter a new fring user id on a mobile where fring has already been installed.

The ideal solution to this problem is by making the user id field always configurable, but I don't think that that is going to happen quickly, for the reasons I've given. What is more likely is that this fix is better documented."

Hope this helps, Fring have fully taken on board the information we've provided and are working to provide a standard process for getting around this problem with emphasis on this solution being resilient and robust.

Cheers
Rich

Further update from Fring on the re-install problems that Bob mentioned:

"I've looked into the reinstalling fring issue further, and have an update (a slightly easier method), which I have tested a couple of times, and which works well:-

If you are reinstalling fring with same user id & password just go to the download page as normal.

If you are (re)installing fring with a different user id to the mobile number then:-
Step 1 - delete all SMS messages from fring - I forgot this step last time and its important
Step 2 - delete any version of fring and APSServer you might already have installed on the phone
Step 3 - either download to PC and install via cable OR visit fring WAP site on your mobile (www.fring.com) and install from there
Step 4 - install as usual, but you will be prompted whether you are a new or existing user during set up

Apologies for the confusion - but this method should work"

Feedback welcome as always!

I have fring on my PPC and I have been trying to set it up to make SIP calls but have so far been unable to do so. I enter all the settings to what I imagine are correct but I get the error "service registration failed. check your credentials.
on hte SIP configuration page I set the following:
User(usr@sip.com I enter the 7 digit id followed by @sip2.plus.net
then my password
under Proxy address I enter nat.plus.net and tried both that on its' own and with :5082
What have I done wrong?

I've got Fring installed on my Sony Ericsson W960i, but unfortunately although receiving calls is fine with good quality I cannot make outgoing calls. I get a ringing tone, but the actual landline doesn't ring.
