Insert flickr photos in posts

« on 28/06/2007, 17:58 »
On the back of the sheffield flood photos thread we thought it would be cool to be able to insert photos into threads without leaving the site. So today I knocked up a simple script that uses jQuery to load photos from flickr using the API and display thumbnails below the post text area in the forum. Clicking on a thumbnail adds the relevant bbcode.

You can see a demo here http://community.plus.net/flickr-test/  (click on 'Additional Options' to expand it)

It currently just loads the first 100 pics tagged 'barcampsheffield' but once we add a field for your flickr username in smf, it will load your most recent photos by default. You'll also be able to search by tag for other people's photos.

It's just a proof of concept so far but what do you think? Ideas/suggestions welcomed.

Wicked - When can I use it...

I just got an N95, so that's ability to upload pictures directly to Flickr and this to push them straight into a post opens a lot of doors :-)

Hope that isn't an unfortunate turn of phrase Wink

Looks good - with over 1500 photos on Flickr, I can see it coming in useful for me some time.

Demo updated: http://community.plus.net/flickr-test/

TODO:
* pagination
* remove from "Additional Options..." and put in "Insert Flickr Photo..."
* save your flickr username to save typing it in
* allow browsing by sets/collections
* better styling
* fix the code so it's a bit less ugly

other suggestions?

I'd suggest this: if a username is given, make the tag search only search that username's photos. Also don't just limit it to tags, but allow it to search title/description text too. (Although I admit it could be doing that already; I haven't checked to be certain - I'm just going by the fact it's called 'tag search'.) Otherwise it looks good though! A unique but very handy forum mod. Smiley

Now live, check it out... treat it as a functional demo as it still clearly needs work. I think a tabbed interface with 'My Photostream', 'Search my photos' and 'Search all photos' might be the best way to do it.

Awesome!   Now you just need to add pagination! Smiley

pagination added. it's built into the flickr api so it was pretty straightfoward. Looks a bit funny now when flipping between pages cos the height of the div keeps changing. Need to make the loading animation go *over* the images rather than replacing them.

I can think of sooooo many comments!   Shocked

Actually, I already knew that Plusnet's Head of Quality Assurance was a rocker, but I remember when Kelly's name first appeared, I had this mental image of a demure little lady.

BarCamp was the giveaway.

Were you at barcamp then?  Or just looking at the photos?

I reckon this flurry of posts with images in of mine will have stopped by tomorrow Smiley
