Most influential games?

March 2nd, 2009 at 08:03 by Carl Lockley

Good lord, two blogs in one week? Normally, I would have waited to put this up, but I just couldn’t.  I have come across something that I just disagree with on many levels, and needed to share my anger!

This week, the Guinness World Records has listed the most influential games of all time, and you can see them here:

http://www.qj.net/Guinness-World-Records-names-its-50-most-influential-games-of-all-time/pg/49/aid/129205

Now I disagree with a lot that has been said on this list, and not just because I can be argumental, but because there is a lot of things on there that are just not that, err, influential. Call of Duty 4 and Sonic 2 for example. Surely the original games in these franchises were more influential, having influenced, y’know, multiple sequels? Pro Evolution Soccer 4? I’m sorry PES, I really am, I love you, but you are *not that influential*. So now, I open the floor to you. Give me **your** most influential games, and tell me why.  Did Donkey Kong open your eyes to something new?  Did GTA 3 rock your world?  What about the Final Fantasy series, or maybe Cooking Mama is more your thing?  Feel free to visit http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,74554.0.html and let us know.

Have fun….

Why on earth is Doom not on that list? I mean honestly...

Gotta agree carl. Call of duty was a continuation of a number of games of its kind, for me COD 2 was more influential as it was the first on the next gen console, and definately the pro evolution soccer 4 addition seems unjust. The original iss games were more influential.

Im suprised that none of the new music games have made the list. Take guitar hero...sparked a mass brawl of music games!

Agreed entirely. Wolfenstein 3D, which then morphed into Doom followed by Quake was the start of all decent first person games. Many games at the time were based on the Doom engine. And what about Elite? The first unlimited adventure game.

Maybe I'm getting old... there are few "influential" games on the Guinness list (I'd reckon 3 at most). It was obviously compiled by someone who grew up with a Playstation 3 or a WII, and whose gaming experience covers about a year, I'd reckon...

For me Goldeneye should be top 3. At the time GE was miles ahead of anything else and prolly raised the bar by huge amounts. After playing GE other games just looked like a bunch of pixels thrown @ the screen. Even to this day i still think GE was the best game i ever played, or maybe i'm just gettin old :)
