Will QoS traffic shaping on Tecnicolour TG582n atleast limit my house mate?

Hi there I've just moved into a house share and i'm a bit of a gamer so id like to follow on with this discussion

My first question there is talk of the games given preference? I play Dota 2 and I only have problems with the one guy in the house share.Basically when he isn't there I can play normally and a solid 30-33 ping in game, but when he is there I cannot even play due to constant and random lag. He literally uses 4 devices at once and I know he streams a lot of sport but constantly.

I've even logged into the router settings to monitor how often his devices are on, I've chatted to him personally and he just keeps doing it. So not here to moan about him, but is there a way I can at least prioritize some bandwidth so I can get a single game in? 

The landlord said I cant have a lan cable so was wondering if with the QOS traffic shaping if I can just limit him as its a 40mb line and its getting to the point where I cant play dota, I cant stream a football game and If i skype the call drops 2-3 times per call etc so I'm using my mobile data to play dota etc. IF I can limit him or prioritize some bandwidth how much would I need to as i mentioned its a 40mb line. Or any ideas?

Otherwise Ill be getting my very one router and wifi at this rate, but as its the other house mate which is abusing it.....

At a guess with the 40Mb/s product (which comes with 2Mb/s upstream) it is a problem with the uplink saturating (becoming full).

I doubt it is a WiFi problem.

You could buy a better router which allows multiple WiFi networks then share the upstream (outbound) bandwidth between the networks.

You might find getting this to work an "educational" experience but I think this will achieve what you want.

I think some of the TP Link products will do what you want. You would ideally get a VDSL (Fibre) capable router and replace both the Technicolor TG582n and the Openreach modem you must have to use the TG582N with fibre.

Alternatively, the Draytek 2820 can be bought second hand for a few £10's and can be set with multiple WiFi networks and rate limiting on each (and loads of other stuff !)

You connect that to the Openreach Modem using the WAN2 port (I did this for some months when I first had fibre).
