plusnet has destroyed my credit score for 6 years for late £19 direct debit

I recently went to remortgage my house and discovered that plusnet have been creating red default markers on my credit file for over a year now, due to a late £19 direct debit payment. I have contacted customer services and they stated that they paid the outstanding amount themselves, but failed to tell me this or indeed the consequences. They are refusing to allow me to settle the account for outstanding £19 as they say the account is now closed. They are continuing to send default makers to credit reference agencies even thought the account is closed and there is nothing I can do about it to settle this and stop the credit markers  - they told me to wait 6 years and then markers will stop being sent.

Does anyone else think this is slightly unfair?

I just want to put this out there so that others are warned about the consequences or small misdemeanours such as mine.

Appalled at this to be honest.
